Sam Slom, diverse cultures and sex offenders

Hawaii only has 1 Republican in its State Senate.

That would be Sam Slom!

Star Advertiser
Sam Slom

And if after next election, there is zero Republicans in the State Senate,  Sam Slom can blame ......................Sam Slom.

You see, a few days ago, Sam Slom was being interviewed by Bill O'Reilly,  the Fox News host who thinks Hawaii laws are too lenient.

(Yeah, I do think Hawaii's justice system can be too lenient on violent offenders, like I mentioned on http://pablowegesend.blogspot.com/2012/06/how-lenient-is-too-lenient.html )

Anyways, Bill O'Reilly asked Sam Slom why Hawaii's politicians refuse to pass laws with harsher sentences for sexual offenders

Here is Sam Slom's answer!

SAM SLOM (R), HAWAII, STATE SENATOR: Well, aloha, Bill. The only thing I can tell you is basically what they say. And I think it's a case of misplaced compassion, compassion for perpetrators and there's also an underlying cultural problem here where some of our diverse cultures actually don't see any problem or any crime in having sexual relations with young children.

You see what I highlighted in red?

And you wonder why Republicans are struggling with minority communities?

You would think Sam Slom, a Hawaii senator would know better.

Apparently not!

Here, UH's head of the sociology department responds

"The statement from Senator Slom that 'some of our diverse cultures actually don't see any problem or any crime in having sexual relations with young children' is inaccurate and offensive.  Clearly the Senator was referring to racial, ethnic and national groups in his use of the term, 'diverse cultures' in the Hawaii context," said University of Hawaii Department of Sociology Chair Valli Kalei Kanuha.  "However, there is absolutely no evidence that child sexual abuse is viewed as acceptable in any social group or community, and is in fact considered an aberration across most societies in this and in every period in history."

So Sam Slom, which groups do you think is accepting of sexual abuse of child?

Sam Slom answers :

Asked Friday about his comments, Slom said they were a small part of the interview and that he did not get the chance to expound on the issue during the broadcast. He defended his comments as factual, however, "that in some cultures that are here, that they have a different interpretation of what may be sexual abuse or molestation."
Slom declined to identify any specific culture "other than to say that they exist here." He cited as an example the case of Howell "Chinky" Mahoe, a kumu hula who in 1998 received five years' probation from a judge instead of a 10-year prison term for sexually assaulting four young dancers. The judge also allowed Mahoe to continue teaching hula to children as long as another adult was present.

In other words, Sam Slom is a coward who talks smack, but when asked to back up his trash talk, he  runs for cover!

But yeah, the Democrats will finally be able to win the State Senate seat for Hawaii Kai. Almost anybody (except a sex offender) could just run against Sam Slom with mailing ads repeating what Sam Slom said!

You can easily imagine an ad that goes something like this:

 Star Advertiser
"This guy thinks your culture is too accepting of sexual abuse of children"
"This guy thinks you dont have any problem with sexual abuse of children"

And what is Sam Slom going to do about it?

Just complain about "political correctness"?
Just whine that his opponent is a "tax-and-spend liberal evading the important issues"?

That's NOT going to be enough!

It's time for new leadership!

Yeah, I'm tired of having one political party running the show in Hawaii!
But it's time for NEW people leading the opposition against one-party rule in Hawaii!

Sam Slom will forever be considered a joke.

If the Hawaii Republicans are smart, they'll ask Sam Slom to step aside and have someone else step in!

I mean, if Charles Djou is still living in Hawaii Kai, he could EASILY save that Senate seat for the Republicans.

After all, Hawaii Kai is the one area Charles Djou has got a strong following!

If not Djou, then maybe someone newer and fresher!

Random thoughts

1) You all heard the cliche "I was only joking".

Yeah, if you were really funny, I would actually be laughing.

And you wouldn't have to say "I was only joking"

Dont be the one who says "I was only joking". Be the one who actually makes people laugh!

2) Yeah, I dont always have time to go to certain events.

Some guy asked if I was going to some block party that night.

My answer : no!

He asked "why?"

I said "no more time"

He didn't like that answer.

Next time, I should just tell him "mind your own business"

3) If you see me at the library reading something or using the computer, please wait until I'm done before "talking story" to me!

4) If you're going to major in medicine, I would think you would want to visit a hospital, right?

If you're majoring in political science, I would think you would want to visit  City Hall or State Capitol, right?

I know, duh right?

But I know this one student majoring in "Library and Information Science" that is too lazy to visit a public library and didn't even know where the Hawaii State Library is.

She also gets offended when suggested that librarians should actually walk with patrons to help find items. A person with that attitude wouldn't last long at Macy's!

And this other student in a Library and Information Science class doesn't even want to use a book, thinks everything should be in a "digital format"

Yep, both students in Library and Information Science that would rather stay home and hide behind the computer instead of ...............you know..........visit a library and read a book?

Who knows, maybe those students can surf without going to the ocean, or surf without using a surfboard.

Good luck with that!

5)  Anyways, I hope you all have a Happy Saint Patrick's Day!
