I'll keep my mask on a little while longer

A few days ago, I posted the video "I'll keep my mask on a little while longer" on YouTube

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5h2wejvU-mM

Even as the mask mandates are being lifted, I'll keep my mask on a little while longer. It's too early to act as if the pandemic is over. Where I'm at the time of this video (Hawaii, March 2022), there is a decline of cases, but there's an increase of cases in Europe and China. What happens there eventually comes here. Also, I have a right to self-defense and the surgical mask provides some level of protection against viruses. This is especially crucial when there's a cycle of a surge occurring after every decline. To all the covidiots who kept yelling "I have rights to not wear a mask", I'll say "if you want me to respect your rights to not wear a mask, respect MY RIGHT to wear a mask". Too many covidiots kept yelling for their rights but don't respect other people's rights. Also, check out my classic video from last year

Thoughts on the 3 major empires of our time

In the modern world, there are 3 major empires: USA, Russia, and China.

Sure,  the UK, France, and the Netherlands still have some overseas territories, but those 3 European empires are now a tiny shadow of their former selves. Nobody is shaking in fear that those 3 nations will take more land for themselves in this day & age.

Iran is more of a regional power competing with Saudi Arabia over who is the king of the Muslim world.  Both have proxies fighting each other in Yemen. And Iran is still considered a major threat to Israel, a nation founded as a refuge for a long-persecuted people. Though Israel is a refuge for a people long persecuted for their ancestry, the government does persecute people for their ancestry. Though Israel does have a large group of opponents, it doesn't even have much land. It's less than 1% of the Middle East.

India is the 2nd most populated nation in the world. Its main external conflict is with Pakistan over the long-disputed territory of Kashmir. The other is a border dispute with China. Other than that, the rest of the world doesn't shake in fear over India.

So now the only 3 major empires left are USA, Russia, and China.

The USA has the world's largest economy and the most well-funded military.

Russia has the most land in the world.

China has the most people in the world.

------------

Rewind back to the era of  1989 to 2000.

It was the end of the Cold War and the USA's time to shine.  The USA was considered the world's last superpower.  Liberal democracy has won. As Francis Fukuyama famously stated, it was the end of history.

And to show that the USA is back from its humiliation in Vietnam, the USA overthrew Manuel Noriega in Panama and expelled Iraqi troops from Kuwait. They also had a successful peacekeeping mission in Bosnia and Kosovo.

The USA had a prosperous 1990s. And top it all off, we were leading the world into the internet age.

As for Russia, it was licking its wounds. While it still had more land than any nation on earth, it was still humiliating to lose control of so many newly independent countries.  While there was optimism that Russia will smoothly integrate into the world of democracy and capitalism, it was suffering under the incompetent leadership of the usually drunk Boris Yeltsin.

As for China, even though the world was outraged at the massacre in Tiananmen Square in 1989, there was still some hope that the country's new openness to capitalism will eventually lead to an openness to democracy.  There was a huge reduction of poverty in China. But there was no reduction in human rights violations by the government.

Enter the 21 century

The USA entered the 21st century as the leader of the world. However, that would be tested in 9/11. The USA got bogged down in wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. The USA had early victories in overthrowing their dictators but couldn't keep the peace afterward. The USA withdrew from Iraq and had an extremely humiliating withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021.

Russia entered the 21st century with a new leader Vladimir Putin. He promised to bring strength and prosperity to Russia. He did both. However, he, as a former KGB agent, felt that the fall of the Soviet Union was the worst disaster in history.  He also had grievances with the US-led alliance NATO, which expanded into Eastern Europe and even with 3 former Soviet republics (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania).

To prevent further NATO expansion, he picked fights with former Soviet republics Georgia and Ukraine, taking a little piece of their territories, and basically daring NATO to fight him over this.

China did become one of the fastest-growing economies in history. Millions rose out of poverty and had a taste of prosperity that the average Westerner experiences.  It was also assumed that the exposure to prosperity and the internet would create a demand for democracy like it did for South Korea and Taiwan in the 1980s.  But it turned out that China would develop the highest-tech systems of controls that the Soviet Union could only imagine.

China with its billions of people created a market from companies of the world wanted access to. But the companies had to follow China's rules. Companies that wanted to do business with China couldn't criticize its human rights violations. That meant film studios would no longer hire Richard Gere, a former romantic comedy star who criticized China's oppression in Tibet.  That also meant the NBA would outcast players and managers who criticize China's crackdowns on Uighurs and on Hong Kong.  Contrast that to the 80s where American media had ZERO fear of mocking the Soviet Union.

The world now

Russia's leader Vladimir Putin isn't satisfied with leading the country with the most land.  He wants more. He wants Ukraine back under Russian control. He also wants to eventually regain control of Georgia, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. But first thing's first.

China's leader Xi Jinping isn't satisfied with leading the country with the most people. He wants more. He wants Taiwan back under China's control. Taiwan was the refuge for the Chinese nationalist leaders who were overthrown by the communists in 1949. All those decades later, China still hasn't forgiven Taiwan for that. It's to the point where China wouldn't accept diplomatic relations with any nation that has diplomatic relations with Taiwan. But most countries want to have trade and economic assistance from the most populated country, they fall in line and refuse to have diplomatic relations with Taiwan.

With the USA having a humiliating withdrawal from Afghanistan, with the Fall of Kabul being so reminiscent of the Fall of Saigon in 1975,  the leaders of Russia and China think it's their time to shine as world powers.

Russia invaded Ukraine this year in the hopes of making it a part of Russia again. The people of Ukraine experienced 30 years of independence and they liked it.  They're not giving that up without a fight.

The world's reaction to Russia was swift. While the world is afraid of a nuclear war with Russia, they had other ways of fighting back. There are boycotts of anything Russian. Companies have been pressured to withdraw investments from Russia. There are travel bans. Russian accounts in foreign banks have been frozen. And to add insult to injury, the US has banned imports of Russian oil. Oil is Russia's main source of income.

China is watching all this! They want to see if Russia's invasion of Ukraine is successful. China plans to learn from Russia's successes and failures so that China can have better luck if they invade Taiwan.  China also wants to see if the worldwide boycott of anything Russian would really work in stopping Putin's imperial ambitions.

Though Russia has more land, its economy is much smaller than China's and less integrated with the world's economy. How many companies are really willing to withdraw from the world's most populated nation. How many companies are really willing to walk away from billions of dollars?

Nearly everything is made in China. If you think the supply chain issue caused by the pandemic is something, wait until you see the supply chain issue if everyone had to withdraw from China with nowhere else to go. Smart business leaders would start diversifying the locations of their factories because if China goes to war, those who make everything in China would be in a world of hurt.

China would have an advantage over Taiwan in that it is much smaller than Ukraine. But Taiwan is richer than Ukraine and hopefully, that means Taiwan has funded more sophisticated defensive systems.

The leaders of Russia and China can be very paranoid. Even any hint of USA support of the opposition could mean nuclear launches towards Alaska, Guam, or Hawaii. As a resident of Hawaii, this is scary.

Hawaii has an independence movement that worries that US occupation makes us targets of retaliation from China or Russia.  After all, it's unlikely that China or Russia would target independent nations like Tonga or Fiji for retaliation.

But many people in Hawaii also worry that if the USA withdraws from Hawaii, China might take over. We do remember Japan warplanes bombed Pearl Harbor in 1941, and there is concern China might even do more than that.

But let's also be real, it wasn't China or Russia that polluted the aquifers in Red Hill (not far from Pearl Harbor), it was the USA military's fuel tanks that leaked that caused the pollution.  The USA government has promised to empty the tanks. time will tell if that happens for real.

While I do hope Hawaii can eventually be independent, it might not happen until Russia or China withdraws its imperial ambitions and become more isolationist. And hopefully, the USA can allow its overseas holdings to become independent.   If all that happens, it could hopefully mean the end of empires and imperialism.

But you know that might be overly optimistic. After all, a lot of history happened after Francis Fukuyama proclaimed the End of History at the end of the Cold War.

While technology changes, human nature doesn't change much. We may have to go through this forever  :(

The anti-mask fanatics are on the attack

Now that the mask mandates are fading away, the so-called freedom fighters are now fighting against the freedom to wear masks.

He fights for the right to spread contagious diseases

A few weeks ago, while walking to the YMCA, I heard a covidiot in a truck saying to me "you're outside by yourself" while gesturing with a hand motion meant to look like he's taking off a mask. I could've given him a middle finger, but I was also near a school and being a former school employee, I still felt the need to set a better example than giving people the finger.

Apparently, somebody felt I didn't have a right to have this on.

But that covidiot was on the other side of the street, he wasn't in my physical space.

However, there's been reports of harassment by covidiots telling people to take off their mask.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/education/2022/02/25/peer-pressure-mask-optional-schools/

These covidiots need to be pepper-sprayed.  That's the only way they'll learn to leave people alone.

I mean, they yelled for months about "muh freedoms", "muh rights" and "muh liberties" but they sure as hell not respecting people's rights to wear their surgical mask.

And what about my right to not be infected with a contagious disease?

=========

And for all you covidiots who scream "masks don't work", why do you think medical professionals been wearing masks on the job all these years, even before the pandemic?

Because they don't want to spread their germs to their patients, especially in their most vulnerable moment.

Also, medical professionals won't be as much help if they're infected by their patients, so they also using their masks to protect themselves.

Sarcastic meme mocking people who don't like surgical masks.

https://www.reddit.com/r/CovIdiots/comments/hrfjst/for_those_who_are_too_cool_to_wear_a_mask/

But the covidiots think they're smarter than those who spent most of their adulthood studying infectious diseases.

Because covidiots don't like wearing masks, they look for anyone to confirm their anti-mask bias. And being politicians (like Ron DeSantis) needs votes, and media personalities (like Tucker Carlson) needs an audience, they'll pander to the anti-mask covidiots for the sake of popularity.

========

As for when I'll stop wearing my mask, it will be months after the last surge or months after my last illness. Even then, I might keep it on as solidarity for the vulnerable, as well as a middle finger to the covidiots.

And even if I decide to unmask, I'm not going to start trouble with someone still wearing a mask.  It's about respecting other people's vulnerabilities.

dealing with attempted break-in and attempted robbery

For a long time, I was fortunate.  I was living in my current apartment for 19 years without a break-in attempt. Also, nobody attempted to rob me within that time frame.

But luck doesn't last forever. My good streak ended this month.

In the past, there was a woman who lived a floor above me who came home drunk and tried to use her key to open my apartment. I yelled out "WRONG ROOM" and she was very apologetic.  Also, in the past, the police rammed into a nearby apartment for a resident accused of domestic abuse. He resisted letting them in and he resisted arrest.

Well, on the first of this month, as I was taking a morning shower, I could hear a loud pounding on my door. The first time I was wondering "an explosion outside?", "the police trying to go after that neighbor again?", etc. Then I could hear another loud kick on my door, and another one. I yelled out "WRONG ROOM!". Then I could hear that man ask "is this _______ room?" I answered "no", then he said "sorry boss" and he took the elevator down.  I've never seen that person before.

My door had no visible damage. I did call the police who took my information over the phone.  They did call me back again for more questions.  We still don't know who that guy was or what his real intentions were.

------

Then last week, I was walking to the bank and then to the shoe repair shop (there was a rip in one of my shoes, and I also had new shoes in which I wanted velcro extensions and heel guards installed). I carried my shoes in a green shopping bag from Longs.

On my way to the bank, I heard a homeless guy saying "that's my bag". I ignored him and kept walking. Then I noticed him following me and he kept saying "that's my bag". I just kept walking and held on to my pepper spray just in case.

Then I stopped at the corner waiting for the light to change. The guy said, "that's my bag, let me see what's inside". Why should I let him see what's in MY bag? I know his goal was to take my bag. I then yelled "STEP BACK!" and pointed my pepper spray at him. He refused to step back so I pepper-sprayed him. I didn't see anything come out of my pepper spray so I just continued walking away from that guy and walked across the street. He kept following me.

I went to the bank and asked them to call the police. He was walking around the parking lot. After the bank employee used her phone while looking out the window, then I saw that guy rubbing his eyes.

The police arrived. They saw him first before they saw me.  As a police officer asked me to come out of the bank, I could hear the guy saying to a cop  "that guy took my bag and he pepper-sprayed me". So I was made to look like the bad guy.  The cop asked me "did you pepper spray him" and I confirmed it. The cop said, "you're not supposed to pepper spray people" as if I  was a kid doing it for fun.

An ambulance came to help the real bad guy, the guy who confronted me over a bag that was mine. They poured water and whatever other chemicals they used against the effects of pepper spray.

The cop that was talking to that guy came over to look at my green bag and concluded that I didn't take his bag. My guess was that he asked that guy what was in that bag, and his description didn't match what's really in my bag.

The cops said to me that I should call the police instead of spraying him. What? The police get away with much worse (including shooting people with bullets) but they lecture me over pepper spray?

If I didn't spray him, he could've punched me, stabbed me, and taken my bag. Even if I did get away and tried to call the police, he could've run up to me and knocked the phone out of my hands (that's why I waited until I got to the bank before asking them to call the police.) And the phone I had is expensive to repair or replace.

Also, had that guy walked away after I yelled "STEP BACK", I wouldn't have pepper-sprayed.  I don't live for confrontations, I avoid confrontations, but when it's unavoidable, I have to protect myself.

So no, I don't regret pepper-spraying that guy. He started it! He wanted to create a dangerous situation with me. He started trouble with the wrong person.

He starts trouble but likes to play the victim when his victim fights back.

The last cop to talk to me said the case wouldn't be likely to result in a criminal trial against me (cross my fingers) but that guy could file a civil suit against me.  That guy should sue himself for his own stupidity.

The police then let me walk away to go on with my day. As they should.

They didn't ask if I wanted to file a case against that guy. They should've! I guess they thought that guy being pepper-sprayed was enough punishment for him.  I hope they told him, the next person he starts trouble with might carry a gun.

As for me, there comes a point in life where I have to live up to the phrase "rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6."

As for that guy, he needs to grow up and leave people alone. It's what I do.

Notes on recent deaths

In this blog post, I will write about 3 people that I've met in my life that have died earlier this year.

Uncle Victor

Victor Cardona was the brother of my late grandma Ramona Wegesend (previously named Ramona Caban).

I've only met him a few times when I was a kid, then I haven't seen him for years, basically because he lived on another island (Maui). The only time I saw him during my adulthood was my grandma's funeral in 2019. At the funeral, he made an impromptu speech towards the end of the service about his relations with my grandma.

An interesting thing about meeting him at the funeral was that he was friends with the family of one of my former students from my substitute teaching days, so I was able to meet that former student again at the funeral. By then, that student already graduated from high school, and we compared notes about our lives after I was subbing at the school.

My grandma's funeral was the last time I saw Uncle Victor. He passed away earlier this month.

It's times like these I wish I met with my extended family more.

Jeffrey Apaka

Jeffrey Apaka was known in Hawaii as a Hawaiian musician who entertained audiences at various hotels in Waikiki, as well as the son of another legendary Hawaiian musician Alfred Apaka.

He also had a day job at Waikiki Community Center (WCC) as the director of community relations. That was where I met him.  WCC has a preschool where I spent some time as a substitute teacher (mostly from 2007-2010), and I used to always see him walking around.  He was definitely filled with Aloha Spirit and good cheer.  He made everyone at WCC feel like a part of the family.

Mark Anthony Garcia

I actually know multiple people with the name "Mark Garcia", so let me be specific,  this Mark Garcia was a former high school classmate. from my time at McKinley High School (should be renamed Honolulu High School) in the late 90's.

I remember he was in my Marine Science class.  He was a funny guy and likes to joke around with people. During free time, he saw me reading the Source Magazine and we would talk about hip-hop music.

My favorite memory was in a pep rally, I would cheer on the seniors and he told me "calm down" and I'm like "aren't you a junior?" Fun times!

I found him on Facebook and we were on each other's friend's list, but he hasn't posted much in recent years so I was out of the loop on what's going on in his life. I found out about his death from one of our mutual friends (another former classmate), and I later learned from one of his relatives (who happened to be a former co-worker) that he had heart problems.

Sad to see someone around my age die so young.

Awkwafina and the Wu Tang Clan

Nora Lum, a Chinese-American entertainer who goes by the stage name Awkwafina, has been getting a lot of flack for using slang that originated in the African-American community. Some people call it "cultural appropriation". She's been pressured to apologize by "woke" cultural segregationists on Twitter who think she should only do things from her ancestral culture. She shouldn't apologize at all!

But she's just doing what the Wu Tang Clan has been doing for decades, incorporating Chinese influences in their music, even though none of them are of Chinese or any Asian ancestries. They are deemed creative geniuses by many in the hip-hop community.

If  Wu Tang Clan member Ol Dirty Bastard (ODB) was still alive, I think he would be making songs and videos with Awkwafina.  It would be classic.

I think it would be cool if Wu Tang Clan would invite her on stage and have her recite ODB's rhymes with them. That would also be classic!

It's time to praise cultural integration.

It's time to defend cultural integration.

People of different backgrounds should be able to come together to share common interests and share each other's slang.  We will never have peace in this world until this happens on a widescale basis.

As the late great Rodney King once said in the midst of chaos, "Can't we all just get along?"

========

PS: check out this classic blog post from last year, in response to "woke" pansies mad at Billie Eillish and Olivia Rodrigo for using slang they learned from hip-hop.
