Pidgin in Hawaii

Kimberly Shigeoka had a great editorial on Pidgin English in Hawaii.

http://www.hawaiireporter.com/story.aspx?0d71a7a6-e014-4e49-9b60-2cb0a1635dc5

My teacher decided to tell the class, in Pidgin, that “You won’t be able to do anything if you speak Pidgin.” He spoke of his own Pidgin speaking friends, who now lead dead-end lives. As he continued to reinforce this statement, I started to become angry. My teacher was off-handedly offending not only myself, but my family as well.

Yes, I am a Pidgin speaker. Not only that, my parents speak Pidgin and my grandparents are full-time Pidgin speakers. I felt helpless and angry as my teacher told us that Pidgin speakers could not become someone. I felt like jumping up and saying that “my grandparents are someone and they speak Pidgin! They are two of the most financially-sound, hard-working people I know.”

Sadly, experiences like my own are common. Many students have been told that it is disgraceful to speak Pidgin. This degradation of Pidgin bashes the self-esteem of many local students, who feel a sense of worthlessness and shame.

1) That teacher should be fired for cultural disrespect and innaccuracy.

I know doctors who can speak Pidgin English and Standard English.

There are plenty of students at the University of Hawaii who can speak Pidgin English to their friends and family, and speak Standard English with professors and classmates from the mainland.

However, the anti-pidgin fanatics will ignore those facts. Facts don't matter to anti-pidgin fanatics.

To solve this issue, we need to show students the difference between Pidgin grammar and English grammar. We teach students who learn English as a second language that their first language is nothing to be ashamed of. That it needs to be kept distinct from English and both languages need to be practiced and studied to stay proficient.

A large problem here in the islands is that students grow up ashamed of themselves and their families. Is this really what we want to be teaching the next generation? That they can never become someone because of their heritage?

Thank you Kimberley Shigeoka

Now, I want to talk about this one Chinese male from my high school. (my fellow McKinley Tigers might know who I'm talking about)

This Chinese male ALWAYS speak Standard English. People tell him "you talk like a haole".

Yet, that same Chinese male struggled in school. He still couldn't calculate percentages in the 12th grade. He flunked plenty of classes in high school and dropped out of community college.
So dont give me this crap that "pidgin is for the uneducated."

What makes it even worse, is that same Chinese male blamed the prevalence of pidgin in Hawaii for his academic struggle. WHAT AN IDIOT! He can't even speak pidign, so why is he complaining.

I know many students at the University of Hawaii who are from rural Oahu and the Neighbor Islands, where the pidgin is a MILLION TIMES STRONGER than the pidgin of urban Honolulu. And those students are academically smarter than that Chinese pidgin-hater!

Then that same bozo complained that making it in Hawaii is overwhelming because (in his words) "you gotta know Standard English, you gotta know Pidign, you gotta know Japanese words, you gotta know Hawaiian words"

I told that bozo that in the mainland, you gotta know Standard English, the local dialect (ie, the Southern dialect, Fargo dialect, NY dialect), Ebonics (African American English) and Spanish.
So dont give me this crap about Hawaii being "overwhelming"

The real reason for that pitiful man's struggle has nothing to do with pidgin. He doesn't take responsibility. Everything is someone else's fault. He's what you call a "victim boy".

That Chinese male is the same I mentioned in the blog. He's the same fool who said "it's not fair that street names in Hawaii are in Hawaiian." He's the same one who is racist tow
ards Polynesians.
6 years ago in Columbine

6 years ago today in Columbine High School, 15 students were killed in a school shooting.

Here is an excerpt from my commentary from a year ago.

=============================================================

We all know that the 2 shooters were outcasts who wanted revenge! We still haven't found out whether the murdered victims were the actual bullies, or were they innocent bystanders. Or were the killers so consumed with hate of everything that they didn't give a shit who they killed! No media outlet has bothered to find out!

Of course, if your son or daughter was a victim, you wouldn't want the media to expose that your child was a bully, even if it was true! That's basic parental psychology we're talking about here! Which is probably why the media still haven't investigated if the victims were the actual bullies!
10 years ago in Oklahoma

10 years ago today, the federal building in Oklahoma City was bombed.

Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols were found guilty. McVeigh was executed, Nichols is serving a life sentence.

Some say we need to racially profile Arabs to prevent terrorism. The Oklahoma City bombing is proof that Arabs aren't the only ones committing terrorism.

McVeigh is from Buffallo, NY. So what, do we have immigration restriction preventing people from moving state to state? If you answer no, should we have immigration restrictions preventing people to move from one nation to another?

Some blamed conservative talk radio for the Oklahoma City bombing. Nevermind that many of the rescue workers that day were also fans of conservative talk radio.

Around that time, then-President Bill Clinton said you cant love your country if you dont love it's government. I wonder if Clinton will say that to Democrats today.

Abortion Reduces Crime

Abortion Reduces Crime

How?

Check out this editorial from the Wall Street Journal

http://www.opinionjournal.com/la/?id=110006550

Back in 1999, Mr. Levitt was trying to figure out why crime rates had fallen so dramatically in the previous decade. He was struck by the fact that crime began falling nationwide just 18 years after the Supreme Court effectively legalized abortion. He was struck harder by the fact that in five states crime began falling three years earlier than it did everywhere else. These were exactly the five states that had legalized abortion three years before Roe v. Wade.

Did crime fall because hundreds of thousands of prospective criminals had been aborted? Once again, the pattern by itself is not conclusive, but once again Mr. Levitt piles pattern on pattern until the evidence overwhelms you. The bottom line? Legalized abortion was the single biggest factor in bringing the crime wave of the 1980s to a screeching halt.

Let's be real about this - people get abortions because they're not mentally prepared to be a good parent of the potential baby growing inside.

And if one isn't mentally prepared to be a parent, chances are, once the baby is born, the baby would more likely 2 be abused. The child will more likely to be in poverty and live in the ghetto. In many cases, the father would ditch mom and the kid - causing the mom to work more than 1 job just to pay the bills. The kid will have a really rough life.

In many cases, the kid would've been better off if born 10 years later, because 10 years later, the mother would be mentally prepared to be a good parent.

In too many cases, kids are born to unprepared parents. In too many cases, those kids don't have the ideal parents and not living in ideal circumstances. In too many cases, those kids are the perfect recruits to violent gangs. In those cases, those kids might've been better off sent to heaven before birth.

Not all kids in those situations end up as violent predators. My oldest brother was born to a single mother. The father ditched the family. Yet, that brother is a college graduate, work at Bank of Hawaii, and has a condo in Hawaii Kai, one of the most luxurious communities in Hawaii.

However, my mom was also lucky to find another man who was willing to care for my oldest brother. In the process, that man had 2 kids with my mom (me being 1 of the 2).

Other mothers aren't so lucky. Other kids aren't so lucky. Too many kids I knew from elementary school dropped out of high school. Some spent time in jail. Some were on drugs the last time I saw them. Some of them, I didn't want to hang out with when I became a teenager because I didn't want to get sucked into their world. Yet, I worry about them now.

This is why I believe in giving out condoms. This is why I believe in selling birth control pills.

While abstinence before marriage is the ideal - in the real world people get into the sexual mood without planning it.

Once the sexual mood jumps in, no amount of conservative correctness (which EVERY person heard a MILLION TIMES while growing up) will stop the sexual mood.

So we ought to live in reality, give people condoms, sell birth control pills, and if the last resort is required, provide legal abortions.

If not, be prepared to be violently robbed by another drug addict born to another unprepared parent.

Girls and $$$$

At Sacred Hearts Academy (the all-girls school in Honolulu), girls are learning money management or as one of the teachers call it - "economic self-defense"

http://starbulletin.com/2005/04/11/news/index1.html

Girls are vulnerable economically because they tend to earn less than their male counterparts, live longer and have lesser retirement plans

Let's not forget that girls really like to have a lot of expensive things like cosmetics, jewelry, flashy clothes, etc. Add it all up - it can lead girls to more economic vulnerability.

"We find that even today, two-thirds of girls in schools, when asked how they're going to support themselves economically, say, 'Well, I'm going to marry well,'" Godfrey said. "At the same time, what we're finding is young men are rebelling and beginning to ask, 'Why should I do that?' What we have emerging is a cultural gap."

And I am one of those young men rebelling against gold-diggers. I am rebelling against paying for everything for a girlfriend. Buying your girlfriend stuff is OK in moderation, but do it 2 much is a sign of weakness. Girls gotta pay their share too.

BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY - girls who when asked how they're going to support themselves economically, say, 'Well, I'm going to marry well - are putting themselves in A LOT OF DANGER!

Abusive males want their girlfriends 2 be financially dependent on them. How many times a woman is reluctant to leave her abusive lover becuase she is financially dependent on him. She has nowhere to go, she's literally a slave to her abusive boyfriend/husband.

That's why I think it's so silly for the Radical Right to demand that woman stay home and let the man work. That's a recipe for disaster and abuse. Abusive males wouldn't have it any other way!

The battle of the Jesses

Sometimes in life, you must alliances with those you sometimes disagree with. It's very unlikely that you'll meet someone who disagree with you 100%. Some people may be pricks, but that doesn't you'll never agree on anything.

Here is the situation with the 2 Reverend Jesse's. One is Reverend Jesse Jackson, the well known African American liberal activists. The other is Reverend Jesse Lee Peterson, an African American conservative and a nemesis of Rev. Jackson.

On the Teri Schiavo controversy, both Rev. Jesse Jackson and Rev. Jesse Peterson happened to agree that the feeding tube should've stayed.

However, Rev. Peterson has so much hate for Rev. Jackson that scolded Teri Schiavo's parents for even embracing Rev. Jackson.

http://www.worldnetdaily.com/news/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=43568

Our prayers go out to Terri and the Schindler family. I know they want to help their daughter, but they should be careful about praying with the devil in their hour of need.

Praying with the devil?

The Schindlers (Schiavo's parents) may or may not agree with Rev. Jackson on many issues, but they put all that on the side when Rev. Jackson supported their side. You gotta do that sometimes.

The Pope

Pope John Paul II has passed away.

He was the first non-Italian pope in 455 years. He spoke up against communism and other forms of dictatorships. He was loved by millions.

Soon, the search is on for the next pope. I wouldn't be surprised if the next pope is from the Third World. That is where most of the growth of Catholic Church is right now. We might have the 1st non-European pope.
