Chuck Berry and Chris Cornell

While 2016 has been known as the year many music icons passed away (i.e. Prince, David Bowie, George Micheal and more), 2017 has its casualties as well.

So far, 2 major rock icons -- Chuck Berry and Chris Cornell passed away this year.

1.) Chuck Berry

NBC Television
Chuck Berry

Chuck Berry was one of the Founding Forefathers of Rock & Roll.

Rock music was started in the 1950's as a mix of blues and country with an emphasis on the electric guitar. Much of the music at the time emphasized youthful rebellion against authority and having a good time.

Chuck Berry was the epitome of that spirit as his songs expressed frustrations with school, and the joys of partying with the opposite sex.

His most famous song was "Johnny B. Goode" which celebrated a fictional guitar player with a story similar to his.

His other hits included "Maybelline", "Sweet Little Sixteen", "Roll over Beethoven" and "My Ding-A-Ling".

===================

Much of the early rock music came from the southern U.S. which at the time was racially segregated. Jim Crow, the nickname for the racial segregation system didn't allow people of European and African ancestries to use the same facilities or have relationships together.  This segregation was violently enforced by both police and the civilian population.

But things were about to change. The civil rights movement was starting to rise.

Meanwhile, rock music had musicians of both African and European ancestries. People were partying to each other's music, and sooner or later, people would start to question why  can't we have fun together.

Chuck Berry, who was African-American delighted both "black" and "white" audiences.  It was then European-American artists like Elvis Presley who spread the music to larger audiences, which caused some bitterness among some from the African-American community who felt Elvis was a "culture thief" and felt he had unfair advantages over Chuck Berry due to their skin colors.

As time went on, European-descendants started to dominate rock music while much of the African-American audiences moved on to soul, funk, and later -- hip-hop.

African-American participation in rock music didn't go away (as Jimi Hendrix, Lenny Kravitz, Slash, Tom Morello, Living Colour, Bad Brains, Fishbone, Bodycount, Jada Pinkett Smith, Baby G and more can tell you). But still, rock music was later seen as "white music" by the general public.

However, that didn't phase Chuck Berry continued to play his hits decades after his early days. After all, the real rock legends and the rock historians recognized his significance.

Chuck Berry died on March 18, 2017 at the age of 90. He lived for 9 decades, but his legacy will live much longer.

2) Chris Cornell

Decades after Chuck Berry hit the music scene came Chris Cornell.

Cornell was the lead singer for various bands including Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog and Audioslave.

Soundgarden was part of the Seattle rock scene with its own sub-genre called "grunge".  The grunge scene started in the 1980s but really became popular in the 1990s with Soundgarden and other Seattle bands like Nirvana, Alice in Chains and Pearl Jam.

Grunge combined elements of other rock genres like heavy metal, punk, alternative, and classic rock, mixed in a way that reflected the grey depressing skies of Seattle with its themes of alienation and depression.

Each grunge band mixed the other subgenres in their own different way. For example, Nirvana mixed the punk, metal and alternative with a rebellion against toxic masculinity. Alice in Chains was more of a heavy metal band but had a more depressing theme than the glam metal bands of the time. Pearl Jam had more of the Neil Young influence.

Soundgarden started as a more traditional heavy metal band.  Songs like "Outshined" and "Rusty Cage" are masculine metal classics.

But Soundgarden also did some more depressing alternative songs like "Black Hole Sun" and "Fell on Black Days".

They also had a sense of humor as they played "Spoonman", a tribute to a street performer who played with spoons.

Soundgarden also teamed up with Pearl Jam to make a double band Temple of the Dog, most famous for their song "Hunger Strikes".

By the late 90s, Chris Cornell left Soundgarden. At the same time, Rage Against the Machine (L.A. based rock&rap band) lost their lead vocalists. So Chris Cornell teamed up with the remaining members of Rage Against the Machine.

Rage Against the Machine (RATM) had a reputation for their songs of political advocacy. They combined the grunge rock sounds with the rapping vocals by their vocalist Zach de la Rocha.

Chris Cornell wasn't going to start rapping and he told RATM's remaining members that he wasn't going to make political songs either.  It was time for a name change for the band. They became known as Audioslave.

So Audioslave kept the same guitar styles of RATM's Tom Morello, but with the Chris Cornell vocals.  It worked, as they had a hit record with "Like a Stone".

Cornell later did solo records as well as reunions with Soundgarden and Audioslave.

He died on May 18, 2017 at the age of 52. His death was reported as a suicide only hours after his last concert.

=============

Going back to the racial themes mentioned in relation to Chuck Berry.  By the time Chris Cornell became a rock star,  rock music has become seen as "white music" by the general public. While Chris Cornell was of European-American ancestry, he has played with multi-racial bands. Soundgarden had an Asian-American guitarist (Kim Thayil) and Audioslave had Tom Morello (who like Barack Obama, has Kenyan and European ancestries).

While Chris Cornell was reluctant to promote social activism in his lyrics, the fact that he played with multi-racial bands that were very successful was in itself a social statement of inclusion.  Around the same time, Alice in Chains, No Doubt and Smashing Pumpkins also had a mix of European and Asian members. At the time, this was revolutionary to see Asian-Americans as part of mainstream musical acts.  It showed that rock music isn't just a "white thing" or "black thing", it's an everybody thing!

As the life of Chuck Berry and Chris Cornell can tell you, can't we all just get along and enjoy the music!

No shame with the low tech & old tech

There's always going to be people are who make snide remarks about any technology that is older than 5 years old as being "obsolete" and "passe".

There's the stereotype than everyone under 30 has that attitude.

But with all stereotypes, there are tons and tons of exceptions.

However, that attitude of "anything older than 5 years is passe" is especially annoying to people who just can't afford the latest gadgets.

When you're struggling to pay rent, you have to make do with what you have, even if the gadgets you had are a decade old.

I usually see those tech snobs as spoiled brats who never lived in poverty, never lived in a ghetto, and therefore never understood the struggle of people who don't have the same blessings.

But it's not just about the money.

People who work long days in low-tech jobs are not always going to have the free time to learn the latest tech when they have other concerns to deal with.

Also, many people who are accused of being "stuck in their ways" have an understanding that if it's not broken, don't fix it! And it's not always good to waste.

========================

New technology doesn't mean the total replacement of old technology.

Within this millennium, there has been the rise of e-books. Entire books can be available on a mobile device.

That can be a helpful option for those not blessed with the physical strength to carry lots of books.

E-books also have options that zoom in, change typeface and even having the words read aloud.

However, e-books does have their disadvantages. Reading from a screen can cause digital eye strain. Also, studies have shown that people can retain more information that they read from a paper than a screen.  (so please print this blog post 😉)

You can learn more about this from my college paper titled E-books an option, not a replacement for print books
http://docs.wixstatic.com/ugd/c8d67a_75bb337c3d4a47a0a367ab4b99586beb.docx?dn=E-books%20an%20option%20not%20a%20replacement.docx

However, not everyone got the memo  about the disadvantages of reading from a computer screen.

For example, in late 2014, the Graduate Student Organization (UH-Manoa's student government for graduate students) no longer provided print copies of grant applications for its members to look over.

I was not happy about it at all!

For one, my only mobile device was a smartphone which had a small screen. How the hell can I analyze a long document with a small screen. Small screens aren't meant to be used to analyze long documents.  But even with a bigger screen, it would still be much easier to read and analyze those documents on paper.

So basically, the Graduate Student Organization (GSO) expected all their members to be able to afford high-tech gadgets to read from a screen to analyze documents that would be easier to analyze from a paper.

They said "it's going green" and "saving paper", and I countered that they could use recycled paper. But really, it was just laziness to spend the time and resources to print those documents.

This "going green" stuff was also why the IUCN World Conservation Congress (which had their meetings in Honolulu last year) didn't provide paper copies of their documents and programs, meaning they expected their members to suffer digital eye strain to examine and analyze documents.  They also expected members to carry out devices that need to be re-charged every few hours (so much for conserving energy).

Again, they could've used recycled paper.

Or better yet, advocate for the use of hemp paper!

Hemp could produce the same amount of paper while using less space than trees.  Hemp paper is also stronger and deteriorate  slower than tree paper.

Casey Yashiki, “Legalize the other ‘green’,” Ka Leo O Hawaii, Aug 31, 201
http://www.manoanow.org/legalize-the-other-green/article_6e3fba1c-4f8b-11e5-a8bb-7758cac502c1.html

The super-plant can be converted into paper that does not turn yellow. On average, trees take about 50-500 years to grow before made into paper; however, hemp only takes about 100 days. Hemp paper lasts longer compared to wood paper and can also be recycled up to three times more.

But the problem is hemp reminds people of marijuana, which scares right-wing conservatives

Time to put those fears aside,  encourage the use of hemp for paper, and allow users who prefer paper to use them to analyze long documents instead of being forced to develop digital eye strain from looking at screen.

================

I work as a substitute teacher, meaning I am a guest teacher who doesn't always get passwords to log into classroom computers that hook up to a smartboard.

But you know what? Smartboards are over-rated and take up too much space.

White boards are easy to use. They don't require electricity (electric outages do happen). They don't require passwords. They don't cause digital eye strain.

I'm just glad whiteboards replaced chalkboards in most schools. All the chalk dust deserved to go obsolete.

-----------

The issue of digital eye strain also makes me unhappy with schools now expecting their students to read online textbooks instead of traditional textbooks.

Yes, I understand that textbooks take up a lot of space and can be heavy. I also understand that updating textbooks can be a pain.

But I also think traditional textbooks should still be an option for students. Maybe some students (especially those not blessed with physical strength) could just use the online textbooks, while given the option to print the few assigned pages they need for the week. But also allow those vulnerable to digital eye strain to have traditional textbooks.

--------

It is less than 2 years ago when I was a graduate student at a university.  Though I wasn't the oldest in the class, I was one of the few (and sometimes the only one) who took lecture notes with a pencil and paper. Others used laptops.

Well for one, I didn't have a laptop until the last semester (and even then, I only used the tablet/laptop hybrid for the GSO meetings to analyze grant documents, since those bastards didn't allow us  to use print copies 😡😡😡.  I sold that device for chump change after I was done with GSO)

I prefer the pencil & paper because it's faster for me to write & illustrate concepts I am hearing in the class. Also, it is easier to concentrate when I writing with a pencil.

Plus, I think laptops are an invitation to be distracted in class. God forbid someone receives painful news or see something hilarious from social media during classtime.

=====================

As mentioned, I do have a smartphone and yes, I defy trends on that one too, since I'm on Team BlackBerry whereas most people worship their iPhones. I'm all about the physical keyboards since they are easier to type on.

My blogs on BlackBerry

I usually turn my smartphone off while at work. Why be distracted?

I just use my wrist-watch to tell time.

And if I need to make a list, I just write it down on scratch paper.

===============

For photography, I sometimes use my smartphone, mostly if I want to share it on facebook now (especially for parties and events).

But otherwise, I rather just use a traditional camera.

I still buy the Fuji disposable cameras.

Pablo Wegesend's photo
Fuji disposable camera

They're especially when I see what could be a great scenery shot,
want to take a photo NOW and I don't want to waste my time turning on my device and log in with a password (BlackBerry takes mobile security seriously and is stricter with passwords than iPhones).

With an analog disposable camera, I just take it out of my bag, aim it and click. Photo taken.

Yes, I'll have to wait for all the film to be used before I develop those pictures.

But if it's a scenery shot, I can wait!

I know one photography shop that develops film and allows images to be stored on a CD. I use that CD to transfer the images to facebook and flickr.

Check my Flickr page at

=============

Talking about CDs, I grew up at a time when it became the most dominant format for music.

CDs are vastly superior to cassettes, which gets tangled and broken  in the cassette players very easily. So cassettes are one of those "old school technology" that I don't really miss.

However, Eminem (whose about a decade older than me) was from a cassette generation and  is still putting out his music on cassettes, even re-issuing his old albums on cassettes. Nothing wrong with sticking with his roots.

I haven't really used vinyl so I really can't speak for its quality. But they are coming back in style, with their sales increasing.

CDs sales did decline, but now are downloads (ie mp3s) are too. Many are now relying on streaming for their music.

Yes, I now mostly listen to music on YouTube. (it's cheaper) But I still would like to get a copy whether it's on CD or mp3.

That's because streaming is reliant on internet access, which can slow down for various reasons. Whereas that is likely to happen with mp3s.  If I'm relaxing, I do listen to the songs I have mp3 copies for, without having to worry about the online streaming being interrupted by internet slowdowns.

======

I used to watch TV and movies growing, but all that declined as I became an adult.  That decline is due to time & money issues.  No time to follow TV series. No money to go to the movies.

I used to watch VHS but videotapes (like audio cassettes) get tangled in video players. DVDs are better.

I occasionally watch documentaries on YouTube. I occasionally borrow DVDs from libraries.

Till this day, I have never used Netflix.

=================

Now, some readers are thinking "ha ha ha, this guy uses a blog to diss newer technology"

I do love blogs, because it allows users to spread their message to a worldwide audience without begging a big publisher to distribute the message.

I'm also a major facebook   user, and I usually have multiple facebook posts everyday.

I also do online shopping if the item I want isn't in nearby stores (especially shoes that fit my wide feet), or if I need to use PayPal Credit to buy something I need to pay in installments. (note: PayPal Credit used to be named Bill Me Later.  The former title was what got me interested in using it in the first name. I wasn't happy with the name change and I told the company that).

I also use computer software to make my instrumental tracks. Cheaper, easier and faster than using traditional instruments.

check them out at

I also use the Movie Maker software to edit YouTube speeches (mostly editing out awkward pauses) and to make music videos that consist only still images (sorry, I don't have the budget to do anything fancier than that).

My music videos

Some of the still images in the videos are made using image softwares Pain and Photoshop!

So yes, some modern technology is a part of my life.

But  I don't need a gadget for everything.   I don't need an app for everything.

Some of it might be due to being "stuck in my ways" that were developed growing up in the 80s and 90s in ghetto housing projects.

Times and situations did change a few things since then!

But my ways work for me.

Don't obsess about my color

So-called Justice Warriors are impossible to satisfy!

They claim to speak for all "people of color" and use that to make guilt trips of anyone they see as the oppressor class (ie. men, European-descendants, etc).

For example, some people will say "I don't see color".

Though some people really do have eyes that can't detect colors, other say "I don't see color" as a statement that they don't obsess about other people's color/race/ethnicity.

But lo & behold, So-called Justice Warriors are "offended" and use their "offense" to force guilt trips on others.

Here's just one example

Some So-called Justice Warriors will whine "I don't want you to ignore my race, it's part of my identity, it's part of who I am"

But what they're really saying is "whitey (or haole, honkie, or other anti-white slurs),  I can guilt trip  you anytime I feel like it, eff you if you don't like it".

Look, I am a person of mixed-race ancestries! I am of mostly of Latin American (some of native, just look at my dad) and European ancestries, though my parent's DNA test also includes Jewish and African DNA! I have a German last name but look mostly Latino, though sometimes people guess I'm Middle Eastern.

But you know what?

I don't spend all day obsessing about my color and my ancestry, even I'm a minority where I'm at (not many Latinos in Hawaii).

And I don't want others to obsess about my color and ancestry when they interact with me!

And yes, I notice your color! I can usually notice your race (though in Hawaii, it is sometimes hard to guess a person's ethnicity when MANY people here are of mixed-race)!

But I'm not going to waste my time obsessing over your racial identity!

Why should I?

Why do you want me to  stereotype you based on someone else who looks like you?

I rather pay more attention to your actions and attitude! I rather pay attention to your content of character!

But saying "I judge based on content of character" offends these So-called Justice Warriors who want all Euro-descendants to apologize for existing.

Please ignore the So-called Justice Warriors and be proud to say "I don't see color" and any similar statements.

Let the So-called Justice Warriors lick their wounds because I NEVER given them consent to speak for me!

Note: I plan for this to be my last letter to Noriko Asato (aka Professional Victim Professor) unless she responds.  I spent months crafting this letter to explain to her why her tactics are psychologically dangerous while making sure this letter isn't classified by a threat, even Noriko Asato claims to feel "threatened" by any assertive disagreement.

But if there's any response, whether by Noriko Asato, any organization that employs her, or by any government authority, best believe I will be writing more on this issue!

Also to anyone who tries to censor this message, I have a right to express concerns to any government official I deal with, and as an employee of a state university, Dr Noriko Asato is a government official and therefore, I have a right to express my concerns on how her service is psychologically dangerous to the people she deals with!

The previous letter is here http://pablowegesend.blogspot.com/2017/04/a-letter-to-professional-victim.html

What I plan to be my last letter (unless there's a response) is below!

============================

Aloha Dr  Noriko Asato,

when I started being a student in the LIS program, my original plan is to eventually donate my future earnings to the LIS Program. But as long as they employ you, I would rather take a bullet to my head than to EVER donate ANY money to any organization that employs psychologically dangerous people like you!

When I was an undergraduate student, I loved working in the libraries because they had a nurturing work environment where my efforts were appreciated. This was a refuge from the verbally abusive environments I grew up in, and I appreciated that there were work environments that don't require dealing with abusive co-workers that millions worldwide have to deal with.

I entered the LIS with the feeling that I would have this nurturing support that I received in my past jobs at the library. I felt the appreciation from true legendary professionals like Dr Knuth, Dr Harada, Dr Bair-Mundy and Dr Quiroga. I feel the true appreciation from adjunct professors who taught classes on children's librarianship and Hawaii-Pacific librarianship.

Reality set in and I realized that the library is not immune from corruption and pettiness from people like you and Tisha Aragaki! Which is it was not only painful that you were too much of a coward to try to negotiate a solution with Tisha Aragaki. Her ways were bad enough, but your cowardice and your psychological bullying (and yes, telling people to remain silent about their grievances is one of THE WORST TYPES OF PSYCHOLOGICAL BULLYING that can ever exist) makes you a much worse person than Tisha Aragaki!

When I asked for evidence of unsubstantiated claims from Tisha about "other librarians feeling uncomfortable around me" or"I shouldn't be working with children", you told me I shouldn't be asking for evidence, as if that will calm me down. ONLY A SEVERELY stupid person could EVER believe telling  ANY HUMAN BEING that will calm tensions.

One of the most evil and satanic things a person can ever do is to tell someone to
"suffer in silence""stop snitching", "withdraw complaints against supervisors"."put your career ahead of justice"

Those are all forms of psychological warfare and are very dangerous to the psychological well-being of those you tell those things to. I would literally rather be called a "piece of s--t" or a "f----- wetback" or a"stupid idiot"  than to be told thing anything equivalent to  "suffer in silence", "stop snitching", "to withdraw your complaints" or to "put your career ahead of justice".
It's like the saying "the cover-up is worse than the crime".

Your actions are extremely psychologically cruel and I have been excessively kind towards you, even my emails towards you are excessively nice towards being that you have been psychologically cruel towards me!

You are mega-lucky I didn't mention the issue at the Graduate Student Organization general assembly! You are so ignorant to not realize that I was a part of the Graduate Student Organization, an organization of militant activists who have severe hatred towards university faculty who bully students into silence! If Dr Chin didn't over-rule you, I would've made a speech in front of the Graduate Student Organization that could've been recorded and broadcast on YouTube! You are severely lucky that I was too nice to do that!

If Dr Chin didn't over-rule, I would mentioned the issue to the state legislature when if they held hearings on Graduate Assistants and Ombuds Office. You are severely lucky that I was too nice to do that!  You took advantage of my extreme generosity. You no longer deserve generosity!

And for you to have the nerve to tell me I shouldn't challenge unsubstantiated claims against me from Tisha Aragaki? You are in an intellectual environment where anything that is said will be challenged. YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO EMBRACE THAT! You are in an intellectual environment  of higher education where people SHOULD BE ENCOURAGED to question unsubstantiated claims, where people SHOULD  QUESTION negative claims against. YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO EMBRACE THAT, INSTEAD  of falsely claiming to be "afraid" of "anger" (your definition of "anger" is anytime anyone refuse to kiss your, anytime anyone express disagreement, with you, anytime even dares question anything you say, anytime anyone even dares express objections to unsubstantiated claims against them). The very fact that you define those things as "anger" shows you are TOTALLY UNSUITABLE for academic institution of higher education, an environment were YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO QUESTION THINGS! The very fact that you don't believe people should question things makes you unsuitable for an institution of higher education.

Stop using words like "afraid", "threatened" or "anger" to deter disagreement. Stop using words like "afraid", "threatened" or "anger" to deter people questioning the things you say.  That you even try to deter disagreement makes you psychologically unqualified to work in an academic environment of higher education.

You claimed in our meeting with Dr Gazan that my emails to you made you feel "very afraid", then I apologized. But then you had the nerve to demand that I sign a paper to withdraw complaints KNOWING FULL WELL THAT WOULD INCREASE MY ANGER BY A TRILLION!  Then when I stated that I would write a blog post about this, you said "I feel threatened" even though NOTHING I SAID COULD BE CLASSIFIED AS A THREAT!  That was when I knew you LIED when you claimed that my previous emails made you feel "very afraid". You're not afraid, you're just trying to deter disagreement. Because you had the nerve to ask me to withdraw complaint, I'm going to withdraw EVERY SINGLE APOLOGY I  said to you!

You claim that my expressions of grievances was  harming the existence  LIS internship program? You claim that I'm making it hard for future for future LIS students. Excuse me? If there's any loss of credibility of the UH's LIS program, it's because your continued employment in UH's LIS program is a severe threat to the program's credibility. If you were truly concerned about UH's LIS program's reputation, than you would resign! Your continued employment in UH's LIS program is a virus not only to the program but also to the university and the library profession. I refuse to donate any money to the LIS program (which WAS my original plan before you mishandled my internship situation) until you leave the LIS program.  In other words, it is YOUR FAULT that the LIS program isn't getting more money!  Because I refuse to donate money to organizations that employ psychologically dangerous scumbags like you!

Both you and I know that your award for the promotion of intellectual freedom is an award you don't deserve!  How the hell can you call yourself an advocate for intellectual freedom when you demanded that I sign a statement that I withdraw my complaint against the Hawaii State Library?

You teach a class about ethics but you demand that I lie about "agreeing" to terminate my internship at Hawaii State Library. You should NEVER teach a class about ethics again, you lying hypocrite!

Did you really think if you thought the public (who pays your salary) would never find out about your hypocrisy?

You are severely ignorant if you thought telling me not have to anger will make me less angry!

You are severely ignorant if you thought telling me to withdraw complaints will actually make me withdraw complaints!

It is impossible to be more ignorant than that! Those who want to be more ignorant need to set more realistic goals.

You have no intellectual depth at all! You only got hired because who you got married to!  And dont' cry "sexism", because your reason for employment is different from the truly legendary librarian professors like Dr Knuth, Dr Harada, Dr Quiroga and Dr Bair-Mundy! Those women earned their positions with decades of librarianship. You only earned your LIS degree in 2011.  You only got hired because you're a crony hire!

You have no intellectual depth at all! And to add insult to injury you told me that you would meet with the HSL manager about my situation and that you will never tell me what what was discussed about me. That in itself is SCUMBAG BEHAVIOR ON YOUR PART!  And you tell me not to be angry about that? Excuse me? Do you want the world know that what you said and did? Is that something you will talk about with pride?

In the previous email, I mentioned that  One of your former students thanked me for making a video publicly criticizing you and she felt guilty for being silent about the way you treated her!

This was some of her words  expressed on facebook

  • A very important video from my friend and colleague, fellow information professional Pablo Wegesend. I'm very happy he posted this, because I too have had issues with this program and with the people he mentions in here on many occasions, and as a result I've felt incapable of pursuing a career in the LIS field...this is a very real issue that I think needs to be addressed, not just for us but for everyone who feels that they are being misguided. So, I hope that I can reach as many people as possible with this, and I feel bad that I never really stepped up like this, so thank you Pablo for posting this.

and this

  • ..it's made me feel bad, like I should have spoken up more when I was having issues with them while I was with LIS.

and this

  • Anyways, I'm going to end my rant there, but yeah, I probably should have spoken out about a lot of things, but since I'm 3 years removed from the program I don't really think it's that relevant anymore....but anything you have to say about LIS, I'll definitely be there to back you up buddy!!

You think you're slick because you treat students like that and having them feel guilty about not having the guts to speak out against you like I did?  Because now I know that I'm not the only one you mistreated! The days when people are silent about your psychological cruelty is over and will never come back! The world now knows that you are a psychologically dangerous person.  That knowledge about you is now available worldwide! You should've thought about that before you met with me!

I might've risked my career with my complaints & posts but I have absolutely ZERO regrets. In fact I am extremely proud of my protests, online posts and video speeches! I notified the HSPLS and LIS that the old days of interns suffering in silence are officially over, more obsolete than a floppy disk!

I have it made it more possible for future interns and other workers to be treated with respect because HSPLS and LIS are now forced to be more cautious on how to deal with disgruntled students and interns! Now, I have inspired other students to stand up for themselves! (I have multiple emails to back me up on that one)

I have put HSPLS and LIS on notice that people of my generation and those coming after mine NO LONGER suffer in silence! just remember that I only learned to use internet technology as an adult, wait until you deal with the generation that learned to blog or tweet before middle school! That generation will be in college in a few years!

It is sad when professors dont encourage their students to become risk-takers! It is sad when professors encourage their students to become ass kissing cowards.  Much of what librarianship is today is because people took risks to their careers! The reason why we even have talks about diversity & intellectual freedom in LIS is because of people like me who refuse to kiss ass,  who put their career on the line, who risk  becoming homeless, who risk imprisonment, so that the future generations can be treated with dignity and respect!  In fact, it is people who refuse to kiss ass, who put their career on the line, who risk  becoming homeless, who risk imprisonment that made it possible for a person named Noriko Asato to be university professors instead of internment camp inmates.

You should learn to embrace mediation, you should learn to embrace ho'oponopono, instead of just giving in to requests from internship supervisors to involuntarily end internships.  Your scumbags can ruin lives by messing with student's financial aid and graduation timelines. IF you are comfortable doing that to your students, than you have ZERO business being uncomfortable with this email, because this email doesn't cause the  level of pain you put me through!

I have a severely high level of hatred towards you and your psychologically abusive ways. If more people were  aware of how you really are, you would lose a lot of love & support!

The best thing you can do is to apologize using your organization's letterhead.  Apologize for the way you treated me! Apologize for refusing to use the ho'oponopono practices that could've solved my dispute with HSL! Apologize for telling me "not to be upset"!  Apologize for refusing to discuss with me what you talked about with the HSL director about me.  Apologize for pressuring me to lie! When you do, I will let the world know that you are finally willing to admit that could've handled things better.  If you don't , I will also inform the world that you refuse to apologize and therefore you are a psychologically dangerous waste of taxpayer's money.

Just know that this entire email can be posted in a public forum whenever I feel like making it public.

If there is no response from you, then this will be my last message to you  on this issue.  But if there is a response from you, please understand that any responses from you, positive or negative, will be made public in multiple ways, in any way I choose.

Any lack of sincere apology  AND any lack of acknowledge of how wrong your actions are WILL ALSO BE NOTED online!

Your reputation is already ruined! This is a point of no return!
If there is no response from you, then this is my last message to you!
==============

PS:   IF you really believe that "it's not good to have anger", you would've just brushed off my earlier  emails like it means' nothing, instead of calling yourself "very afraid"  and "threatened". By telling me "it's not good to have anger" and to "not be upset at Tisha's claims", you have ETERNALLY forfeited any credibility to claim that this email has made you uncomfortable.

If you really practiced what you preach to me, then you would be bothered by this email at all!  Practice what you preach!

Now, here's some accurate memes of about Noriko Asato (aka Professional Victim Professor)

This is Noriko Asato. This lowlife scumbag tells people to remain silent about negative experiences! This lowlife scumbag tells people to just be accepting of every bad thing that happens to them. Don't be surprised if this lowlife scumbag treats victims of discrimination, rape, and other forms of abuse the same way. Nevermind that this lowlife scumbag has easily hurt feelings that just can't accept having cliche's questioned in an assertive manner! Her easily hurt feelings feels afraid of assertive disagreement.

This award winning teacher of professional ethics and promoter of intellectual freedom .... gets upset when interns refuse to lie about their situation, doesn't like it when interns complain about unethical supervisors, tells interns to withdraw complaints about their situations, calls herself. "very afraid" and "feels threatened" when confronted by assertive disagreement, tells others not to be upset about workplace trauma, yet she has easily hurt feelings. Everything mentioned above is true, and the facts are available online to anyone worldwide with internet connection! This reminds me of Bill Cosby getting awards for preaching morality.

Wake up with the Brown Privilege

So-Called Justice Warriors are quick to protest when some Anglo actress wears a Halloween costume or do other "cultural appropriations".

However, they are largely silent about the 98.5's Wake-Up Crew, 3 radio shock jocks of Hawaiian & Asian ancestries who specialize in  mean-spirited jokes. Their jokes includes racist jokes about Micronesians and European-Americans, as well as cruel jokes about the homeless and disabled.

Just one example, as mentioned in the Hawaii Independent
http://hawaiiindependent.net/story/racism-in-hawaii-is-alive-and-well

On the morning of Friday, May 23, at around 7:15 a.m., Disc jockey Brandon “KreyZ” Oshiro of Island 98.5’s radio show “The Wake Up Crew” told a joke for the show’s “stupid joke Friday” segment. The joke was directed toward Micronesian immigrants, who are the most recent and least established group of immigrants to come to HawaiÊ»i, and who have suffered the brunt of racial jokes, slurs and violence in the past decade. The joke was as follows:
“Why aren’t there many beautiful Micronesians? Because babies with birth defects are usually terminated before birth.”

Imagine if you're a child or a teen of Micronesian descent hearing that stuff on the radio? You're already going through the usual childhood/teenage insecurities, but add to that, you hearing a joke that basically encourages your peers to make extremely mean-spirited jokes about you based on your ethnicity.

So basically, the 98.5 Wake-Up Crew is the the brown-skinned version of Donald Trump and Ann Coulter.

And just like Donald Trump and Ann Coulter, just when you think they can't get any lower, they do just that

Here's what someone mentioned on facebook

Island 98.5 Wake Up Crew was exceptionally rude this morning.
*woman calls in*
Wake up Crew: Woah, how old are you?

Woman: 41.
W.U.C: Why do you sound like a little girl? What happened to you when you were 7? Usually when something happens as a child your voice gets stuck sounding like you're still that age. So what, did uncle make you sit on his lap or something?
Woman: Yes, actually.
I'm speechless. Spitting ignorance over the airwaves is the norm for these imbiciles. But making a joke about child molestation? Wow. That's a new low..even for these half-wits.
[Note: I don't ever listen to their morning show for this exact reason. But 98.5 was left on from last night and, being in a rush this morning, I didn't realize what I was listening to until it was too late. NEVER AGAIN.]
iHeartRadio
Feel free to share this post.

Now imagine the outrage if Milo Yiannopolous said something like that.

He was banned from a conference for jokes like that!

But because 98.5's Wake-Up Crew are brown-skinned males of Hawaiian-Asian ancestry, the So-Called Justice Warriors say nothing!

That right there is Brown Privilege!

Excuses are made. If somebody is offended by the 98.5's Wake-Up Crew, the So-Called Justice Warriors will say " what about Rush Limbaugh?"

98.5 Wake-Up Crew is WORSE than Rush Limbaugh!

I remember spending time listening to Rush Limbaugh back in the early 2000's.  Most of the time, he isn't really that mean-spirited. Sometimes, his jokes are cringe-worthy, but that's sometimes. The 98.5 Wake-Up Crew is ALL THE TIME!

But when Rush Limbaugh says something mildly offensive, it becomes a national scandal that lasts a few weeks.

Of course, 98.5 Wake-Up Crew claim their critics aren't with the "local culture".

Don't tell me where I'm from, I grew up in Hawaii, and I'm from the same environment that some of the 98.5 Wake-Up Crew's fans are from. I'm from Kalihi and some of my relatives grew up in Waianae, so I don't need any lectures about my familiarity with Hawaii's ghetto culture.

But being from the ghetto doesn't mean you have to be a trashy person!

You can also be funny without being mean-spirited.

Frank DeLima had his controversy in the past about ethnic humor, but he has since toned down his act. He does some ethnic characters, but they still showcase their humanity and he can do those characters without being demeaning.  Just like how Robin Williams can portray characters with foreign accents without being demeaning.

But still, the 98.5 Wake-Up Crew claim that their critics can't take a joke. Well, would they make that type of joke in the physical presence of  somebody they don't know that is tougher than than them and is pointing a weapon aimed at their face? Would they make that type of joke when they are weaponless and physically surrounded by the 20 of the same type of people they mock?

Of course not! But the 98.5 Wake-Up Crew make those jokes in the safety of their radio station's walls and make fun of the vulnerable. They think that making fun of the vulnerable makes them tough!  That is fake toughness! Real Toughness is about defending the weak from the bullies. Real Toughness is about defending the spirit of inclusion and equality even when it's not popular!

-----

As far as I'm concerned, I don't even bother with 98.5 FM at all.

I can hear the same songs (mostly reggae and Hawaiian) on 93.1 or on FM 100, without listening to these 98.5 Wake-Up Crew jerks!

And if I was one of the local reggae artists, I would use my copyright privileges to block my songs from 98.5 until the Wake-Up Crew is gone.

So while the 98.5 Wake-Up Crew has their freedom of speech, so do I!
