Ozzie Guillen and the Freedom of Speech

It's early in the baseball season.

And the Miami Marlins have started to play in their new stadium.

It is supposed to be a time of great optimism.

However, the Marlin's manager Ozzie Guillen, already notorious for blunt statements, has gotten more notorious.

Ozzie Guillen

http://www.salon.com/2012/04/10/guillens_pro_castro_candor/singleton/
There’s not much reason to doubt that baseball manager Ozzie Guillen admires Fidel Castro. He said so five years ago in an interview with Men’s Journal. When asked to name the toughest man he knew, Guillen replied, “Fidel Castro. He’s a bull—- dictator and everybody’s against him, and he still survives, has power. Still has a country behind him. Everywhere he goes, they roll out the red carpet. I don’t admire his philosophy; I admire him.’’
No one cared about that macho thought because Guillen was skipper of the Chicago White Sox at the time. As the newly hired manager of the Miami Marlins, Guillen repeated the notion to Time last week–”I respect Fidel Castro,” he said. “You know why? A lot of people have wanted to kill Fidel Castro for the last 60 years, but that [expletive] is still there”–and he found himself on the brink of unemployment.

Remember, Guillen said this as a manager of a Miami sports team!

Miami has plenty of Cuban-Americans, a large number of whom ran for their lives  after Fidel Castro took over Cuba!

In other words, Guillen insulted his team's fan base! He insulted his customers!

For that he got suspended for 5 games!

I would have fired that guy ON THE SPOT! Many Miami Cuban-Americans want him fired!
---

However, there are some fools out there who say "Ozzie Guillen has the Freedom of Speech, how dare his critics want him fired!

One of those fools is Dave Zirin, a radical left-wing sports pundit who works at the radical left-wing magazine The Nation

http://www.thenation.com/blog/167303/big-trouble-little-havana-perilous-politics-ozzie-guillen

Let’s leave aside the rather glaring irony that the politicians, sports commentators and Cuban exiles want to show their love of freedom by taking Guillen’s job for the crime of exercising free speech
But this issue is bigger than Guillen and it’s bigger than Cuban exiles who dream of returning to a smoldering “free Havana,” with Castro’s head on a pike. It’s bigger than the petty hypocrisies of those who stand for freedom by denying it for others

Look at this nonsense of "Cuban exiles want to show their love of freedom by taking Guillen’s job for the crime of exercising free speech"

The Cuban exiles ARE NOT asking that Guillen be put in prison for his pro-Castro comments!  They are asking that he be fired!

Just as if you were a customer and a retail worker said "you look fat in that dress", you want that worker fired, right?  Even if all that retail worker did was use the wrong words!

And that retail worker WOULD GET FIRED if the managers find out!

Freedom of Speech WAS NEVER about protecting privilege of employment when you say stupid things!

Freedom of Speech DOES NOT PROTECT YOU FROM CRITICISM!

So Ozzie Guillen had the Freedom of Speech to say good things about Fidel Castro. And I got the Freedom of Speech to call him a "sack of stuff you wouldn't dare eat!"

Freedom of Speech is a 2-way street!

-------

Dave Zirin, being a Radical Left-winger, takes the issue of Fidel Castro WAY TOO LIGHTLY!

Dave Zirin
photo from the Nation
Dave Zirin,
the man who takes Castro's reign of terror lightly

Radical Leftists love to say crap like "yeah Castro tortures people, but that's minor stuff! He's so great because he brought socialized health care to Cuba"

These Radical Left wingers tend to be the same folks who whine about President Bush being a "torturer" and a "war mongerer"! Nevermind that neither Kanye West nor the Dixie Chicks were imprisoned or tortured for their criticism of President Bush! And there was no machine guns used on anti-war protests during Bush's presidency! The critics of Fidel Castro were not so lucky!

And the Radical Left are the same folks who get angry when someone says good things about Chilean fascist dictator Augusto Pinochet's free-market policies!

Argue what you want about socialized medical care systems. However, Canada, the United Kingdom, and Sweden have such systems through a democratic process! They didn't have people escaping for their lives like what happened when Fidel Castro took over Cuba!

And to be fair, the United States, India, Botswana and Turkey were all able to introduce a more free-market economic system through a democratic process. It didn't  have people escaping for their lives like what happened when Augusto Pinochet took over Chile!
--

And now back to Dave Zirin, he has also made a vicious smear on the anti-Castro Cubans in Miami

http://www.thenation.com/blog/167303/big-trouble-little-havana-perilous-politics-ozzie-guillen
But what’s crazier? Guillen’s views on Cuba or the fact that an aging coterie of people who mourn for the strong hand of Fulgencio Batista control the political debate in South Florida?

Fulgencio Batista was the dictator of Cuba before Fidel Castro took over! There was some corruption going on during Batista's reign! However, under Batista, there WAS NOT tons of Cubans escaping for their lives!

When Castro took over, there were people who thought "hey, maybe things would be better now that Batista is gone"

But Castro was WORSE than Batista! He was a communist, who confiscated all property from private ownership. Those who publicly objected were tortured, imprisoned, and even murdered!

Even former Castro allies who took "hey Castro, you're going too far" got tortured!

A commenter gave it straight to Zirin

"We’ve seen rallies, demonstrations and walkouts at dozens upon dozens of high schools in Florida alone. Even more remarkably, this resistance has found expression in the world of sports. An impressive group of NBA players from Carmelo Anthony to Steve Nash to the leaders of the NBA Players Association have spoken out and called for justice. " -Dave Zirin on the Travon Martin incident.

Dave Zirin, pretend that George Zimmerman was named Fidel Castro. Now, pretend that instead of killing one innocent person, he killed thousands. Your previous articles seem to indicate that you support those who speak out against injustice. Perhaps you should try a little consistency. Otherwise people might get the wrong idea and start to believe that you're just an apologist for human rights violators.
Another thing, my family was exiled to this country long ago by the bloody Castro regime. We're proud to be Americans and respect this country's institutions. Please don't slander Cuban-Americans by trying to insinuate that they're yearning to substitute one dictator for another. It's untrue, it's a cheap shot and it's unbecoming of you based on some of the better articles I've read of yours in the past. Every American of Cuban descent that I've ever met (granted I'm not from Miami) has spoken of their his or her desire to see democracy take hold on the island. Were you attempting to make a point that the current dictator was better than the prior or that Cuban Americans lack grounds to oppose Castro's dictatorship? I'd like to know.
Now, as for Ozzie. He can say whatever he wants. I like the guy. But this was one of the dumbest PR moves I've ever seen because he broke one of the cardinal rules in business: don't insult the customer!
And another commenter said this to Zirin

<< an aging coterie of people who mourn for the strong hand of Fulgencio Batista control the political debate in South Florida?>>
Do you know how many people who fought against Batista and initially supported the revolution against him are in Miami today??? That is not including those that have been purged via state violence, torture, intimidation, or murder.

Just because you oppose one totalitarian dictatorship, does not mean you yearn for whatever came before.
Under your reasoning, Trotsky was a Czarist, Robespierre a Monarchist, etc., I have agreed with many if not most of your blog posts, but in this case you are obviously completely ignorant on the topic.

Yes, like I mentioned, many former Batista opponents who thought "maybe Castro might be better" ended up running for their lives when they found out who Castro really was!

That Dave Zirin would insult those people shows want a punk he truly is!

It takes a certain type of punk to mock victims of torture! Dave Zirin is that punk!

-----------

I remember listening to ESPN Radio's talk show host Colin Cowherd on this issue!

photo from ESPN
Collin Cowherd

He reminded listeners that Castro was someone who tortured thousands of people! He reminded his listeners that a lot of Miami Cuban-American had relatives who were TORTURED and KILLED by Castro's agents!

And that it is human to be very emotional against SOMEONE WHO KILLED AND TORTURED YOUR FAMILY!  For the Miami Cubans, that someone is Fidel Castro!

Fashion shouldn't get you killed!

For decades, teenagers like to portray themselves as the superstars who portray the "dangerous" lifestyle.

In the past, many teenagers imitated the style and the swagger of musicians like the Rolling Stones, Kiss, Guns & Roses, and Slayer!

While those teenagers imitated those musicians, they usually grew out of it, and go on to lead at least 90% honorable lives.

Trayvon Martin named referred to himself in one of his social-network pages as "No Limit N_______a", which was named after  for No Limit Records (the record label) and No Limit Souljahz (members affiliated with that record label).  No Limit was led by Master P, and had members like Sillk the Shocker, C-Murder, Mystikal, Mia X, Fiend, Kane & Abel and Mercedes.  They also made hits with other artists like Snoop Dogg and E-40!

Because Martin called himself a "No Limit N_______" and had  some photos posing with a gangsta swagger, many right-wing extremists have been portraying Martin as some kind of dangerous monster, when in reality, he was just minding his own business when confronted by George Zimmerman for "looking suspicious". Zimmerman killed Martin and claimed he was "standing his ground" when in reality, he started the fight.

Joe Scarborough, a former Republican Congressperson and now a conservative talk-show host, made some good points about this.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/03/30/joe-scarborough-trayvon-martin-conservative-websites_n_1392019.html

On Friday, he excoriated some conservative websites for defending Zimmerman and questioning Martin's innocence. He said that he found their behavior "disgusting."
"Why is it that some on the right are actually taking this up as a cause?" Scarborough asked. "As National Review said almost immediately after it happened, this has nothing to do with gun rights, this has nothing to do with the Second Amendment, this has nothing to do with stand your ground laws, this has nothing to do with the NRA. This has everything to do with a guy that's trying to play security cop, who is unhinged, who chased down and shot a 17-year-old kid armed with Skittles and iced tea.'"
Scarborough warned that conservative sites should follow the National Review and "not take this up as a cause." He took issue with their portrayal of Martin in particular.
He said, "some racist websites, but also sadly some fairly mainstream websites are actually going into Trayvon Martin’s social media pages, be it Twitter or MySpace, and they're trying to find ominous looking pictures while skipping over pictures of him holding up a birthday cake smiling, him fishing with his dad, him standing outside proudly of his home dressed in a tux ready to go to prom."
"This is beneath contempt," Scarborough railed. "These people on the far right are being fools to try to make this a political issue.”

The parts I highlighted are very important.

Yeah, Martin had photos showing a tough-guy side of him.

In other words, pretty much acting like about 90% of teenagers out there!

I mean, most teenagers (black, white, brown, yellow, rich, poor, whatever) want to impress through their peers with  social network pages with pictures of them sticking middle fingers, flexing their biceps, holding fake weapons, and imitating the fashion of hardcore rock or rap artists!

Most of it is Just Image and Acting!

Most of them are smart enough to know NOT to act like that at a job interview, or at a church! And they sure are NOT acting like that in front of their grandparents!

Most of them will just grow out of it, and go on to lead 90% honorable lives as adults.

After all, even most cops under 40 were once fans of NWA, Ice-T, and 2pac who made anti-police songs!

(what.... did you think cops who grew up in the late 80's through the 2000's were only listening to children's songs & smooth jazz?)

And Ice-T later portrayed a police officer on "Law and Order"! And NWA member Ice Cube is now more known as that guy from the children's movie "Are We There Yet?"

And 2pac, even though he had a gangsta swagger and a violent temper, he also made songs sympathizing with single mothers ("Keep your head up" ,"Dear Mama"), romantic love songs ("Do 4 love") and expressed hope for unity between African-Americans and Mexican-Americans ("To Live and Die in LA").

Most people have a positive side and a negative side. It's just that 2pac was more honest about it than the most of us!

--------

TV reporter Geraldo Rivera had some controversy over his comments on Trayvon Martin's fashion sense when he get confronted and killed by Zimmerman.

http://www.salon.com/2012/03/23/hoodies_dont_kill/

Rivera's controversial words highlighted in pink!

No one black, brown or white can honestly tell me that seeing a kid of color with a hood pulled over his head doesn’t generate a certain reaction,” he writes. “Sometimes scorn, often menace.” And maybe sometimes, oh, that’s my neighbor Trayvon. Rivera assumes that casual sportswear makes the man, that it dehumanizes a dark-skinned kid into a stereotype from “crime scene surveillance tapes.”
Rivera, as the parent of a teen, calls this a “teachable moment.” “I am begging parents of kids in Trayvon’s vulnerable demographic to heed my politically incorrect approach to this story,” he explains. “If you dress like a hoodlum eventually some schmuck is going to take you at your word.” It may be a well-intentioned warning: the kind of thing women have heard for decades about the length of their skirts. The only difference is that in one case, the chastisement is not to dress like a victim, and the other is to not dress like a perp.

Of course many parents want their kids to dress themselves in a "proper manner", so that the kids represent themselves as someone "civilized".

I mean, if I was a parent, and I noticed my teenaged kids starting to wear all blue or all red, a part of me will think of it as a warning sign! In fact, I remembered from working at Central Middle School, that all red items will be confiscated since that is seen as representing the Bloods from Mayor Wright's Housing, which is in that school's district.

Also, many parents start to worry if their daughter start wearing skimpy clothes, worried that some males will take it the wrong way and would harass and even raper her.

However, when it comes to rape, THE BLAME SHOULD BE ON THE RAPIST, ........NOT on the victim and her sexy clothes.

And for murder, THE BLAME SHOULD BE ON THE KILLER,  ......... NOT  on the victim's hoodie or colored bandana.

However, from the same article that I quoted earlier

No, he wasn’t dressed like a hoodlum. He was dressed like a kid. Yeah, sometimes hoodlums wear hoodies. So does just about every teenager in America. Let’s be clear — Martin was not swaggering around with a ski mask over his face and a knife in his hand. He was a kid who had thrown on a jacket on a rainy night. He was not, as Geraldo says, “wearing a costume that is really a sign that says ‘shoot me,’” any more than a woman in heels is wearing a sign that says “rape me.”

And that led to the website filled with Geraldo Rivera wearing a hoodie.

What "stand your ground" really is

Many gun-control fanatics are playing the racial "divide & conquer" game on the "Stand your ground" issue!

AS you may recall, a volunteer "watchperson" George Zimmerman (who happens to be Latino & Jewish) who followed and confronted Trayvon Martin (who happened to be African-American) just for "looking suspicious".  Zimmerman started the fight, shot Martin, then Zimmerman claimed he was "standing his ground" as a defense!

That was bad enough!

Then Radical Left-wingers like Bryce Covert, Tom Tommorrow (comic artist- This Modern World) and other claim "stand your ground" is an excuse for racists to kill!

BULL-STUFF!

Those Radical Left gun-control fanatics will shut their ears and yell "we can't hear you" when I'll tell this story I just saw online.

It's about an African-American male who "stood his ground" and shot a home invader!

http://www.clickondetroit.com/news/news/75-year-old-Detroit-man-who-shot-intruder-won-t-be-charged/-/4714498/9830764/-/6bgab2z/-/index.html

Willie White said he was only trying to protect his wife when he shot and killed an 18-year-old man who was trying to break into his home on city's west side Tuesday morning.
White said his side door was kicked in at about 1 a.m.

"I could see him from right here. That's when I fired," he said.

The police warrant

A warrant presented by the Detroit Police Department was reviewed by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office. The warrant was denied Friday because there was insufficient evidence to charge White with a crime because he acted in lawful self- defense.

 The prosecutor's statement

"Although every death is a tragic occurrence, in this case Mr. White discovered an armed intruder had forced his way into his home in the middle of the night. He had the right to use deadly force to defend himself under these facts because he had an honest and reasonable belief that he was in danger of imminent death or great bodily harm at the time," said Prosecutor Kym Worthy.

To all you phony " progressive" gun control fanatics who PRETEND to be "friends to the minorities" YOU ARE NOT OUR FRIENDS!

You gun-control fascists are not the friends of  minority folks who worry about home invaders and POLICE WHO WON'T COME IN TIME!

You gun-control fascists are not the friends of  minority women  who need to protect themselves against abusive boyfriends banging on their doors late at night!

You gun-control fascists are not the friends of  minority property-owners who worry about robbers, looters, etc.

And don't give me this stuff about "at least we ain't the far-right anti-immigration racists", because YOU ARE JUST AS BAD AS THEY ARE !

Those "progressive" gun-control fascist promise to be better rulers of the minority folks than the racist-segregationists, anti-immigration radical right-wingers!

We don't want better opressers! We want to "Stand Our Ground" and screw off if you don't like it!

"stand your ground" laws

Common sense should tell that you should be allowed to defend yourself (or your family) from an attack by all means necessary!

The "stand your ground" laws protect you from prosecution if you hurt, injure or kill your attacker!

After all, if that person did not attack you, you wouldn't have hurt, injured or killed him!

That is supposed to be common sense.

However, common sense is not as common as it should be.

"Stand your ground" DOES NOT MEAN going after someone who "looks suspicious"

Even if you think that person may be "up to no good", if you don't have evidence,  JUST LEAVE THAT PERSON ALONE!  Sometimes, a person is just lost!

However, some people are so paranoid about "people up to no good", that they think any stranger is "up to no good" and "needs to be confronted".

In Florida, this one guy who goes by the name of George Zimmerman claimed to be the "neighborhood watchperson".

However, Zimmerman is a racist prick who thinks any African-American walking in his neighborhood is "up to no good"

http://articles.orlandosentinel.com/2012-03-20/news/os-trayvon-martin-george-zimmerman-20120320_1_robert-zimmerman-domestic-violence-online-petition

Teontae Ami, who also lives in the Retreat at Twin Lakes community, said very few black teenagers like himself live in the neighborhood.

Teontae, 17, said he and a close friend who is black would sit at the end of a driveway in the evening and felt uncomfortable when Zimmerman would pass them on a neighborhood patrol.
They used to greet him, but he never responded, Teontae said.
"I think he took his job too seriously," Teontae said, referring to Zimmerman's watch patrols. A student, Teontae said his friend was once confronted by Zimmerman, who accused him of stealing a bike.
"I don't want to call it a black thing, but it sure seemed like it," said Teontae, who said the bike was never stolen.

Another neighbor, 55-year-old Frank Taaffe, defended Zimmerman as "not a racist."

Taaffe, a marketing specialist who had been a watch captain with Zimmerman until December, said he may have been "overzealous, maybe," but "his main concern is the safety and welfare of the community."

Overzealous maybe?

It's a lot more serious than that!

What Zimmerman did to Trayvon Martin was a lot more than just "overzealous, maybe"

http://www.npr.org/blogs/thetwo-way/2012/03/19/148905661/killing-of-fla-teen-trayvon-martin-becomes-national-story-about-race

"Seventeen-year-old Trayvon Martin of Miami, was walking from a convenience store to the home of a family friend in a gated community in Sanford on Feb. 26th. He was confronted by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman. Zimmerman called police to report a suspicious person but before police arrived, the two struggled and Zimmerman shot and killed the teenager. Community members are demanding Zimmerman's arrest but Sanford Police say they don't have sufficient evidence to dispute his claims of self defense."
At the Orlando Sentinel, which has extensive coverage, there's a story that notes how — beyond the issue of profiling — "if George Zimmerman didn't break every rule in the book when it comes to Neighborhood Watch programs, he came close. ... Zimmerman was armed. He was alone. And while waiting for police, he somehow got into a fight with the person he thought suspicious. All three of those actions are strongly discouraged by the National Sheriffs' Association, which oversees about 20,000 Neighborhood Watch programs."

Zimmerman, 28, has not been charged with a crime. According to The Associated Press, "in the months leading up to the shooting, [he] had called police numerous times to report incidents.

So, there's NOTHING "stand your ground" about what Zimmerman did to Trayvon Martin.

Martin did NOTHING to threaten Zimmerman, yet Zimmerman considered Martin "suspicious".

And Zimmerman decided to confront Trayvon Martin for "being suspicious".  Zimmerman STARTED THE FIGHT with Martin by confronting him. Zimmerman couldn't handle the fight THAT HE STARTED, so he shot Martin and claimed "self-defense" and "standing his ground".

It is NOT self-defense when you confront someone in an agressive manner. And that is not "standing your ground"

Zimmerman (who is a mix of Latin American and Jewish)  already had earlier incidents with African-Americans he considered "suspicious"

Sounds like a paranoid guy with racist tendencies!

A comic being passed around facebook, source unknown

Here's more on the story.

http://news.yahoo.com/trayvon-martin-case-lead-investigator-asked-step-down-231154652--abc-news.html

Martin, who was black, was carrying only a bag of skittles, ice tea and his cell phone, when Zimmerman allegedly killed him on Feb. 26. While Martin's family has repeatedly called for his arrest, Sanford Police accepted and stand by Zimmerman's claim of self-defense.

Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law gives enormous leeway to people like Zimmerman to use deadly force if they feel threatened. Since the law was enacted seven years ago, justified homicides in Florida have jumped threefold, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Twenty states have similar laws, but Florida's is widely viewed as having the broadest application. Courts across the state have been trying to figure out how to grapple with the legislation and the Martin incident is one of several examples that have stirred controversy.

In another ongoing trial, lawyers for Trevor Dooley are using the law to defend him in the death of his neighbor David James. In 2010, Dooley shot James in front of his 8-year-old daughter after witnesses say the two men got into an altercation on a basketball court in Valrico, Fla., when James tried to prevent Dooley from shooing away a teenage skateboarder using the court to practice tricks.

Dooley's attorneys argue that he is protected by Florida's "Stand Your Ground" law and that he shot James in self defense. They argue that mundane neighbor disputes can turn violent.

Cases like this and Martin's have led Florida State Representative Dennis Baxley, R-Ocala, one of the original sponsors of the law, to say that it has been misused.

"There was nothing in this statute ever intended to protect somebody who was pursuing or confronting other people," said Baxley.

Common sense would tell you that!

Zimmerman just confronted someone he thought was suspicious, shot and killed him, and he claimed it was "self defense"?

And the local police believed him?

And it was considered a "stand your ground" incident?

HELL NO!

Not only are the local police idiots for believing Zimmerman was "standing his ground", so are multiple writers at this Radical Left-Wing magazine The Nation!

The writers at The Nation thinks Zimmerman's action means it is time to do away with "Stand your ground laws" nevermind that what Zimmerman did HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH "STAND YOUR GROUND"

The most idiotic example of this confusion at The Nation is Bryce Covert.

http://www.thenation.com/blog/166908/trayvon-martins-killing-and-our-deep-distrust-government
The law that may have emboldened Zimmerman, and that has most definitely shielded him from proper prosecution, is referred to as Florida’s “stand your ground” law. Passed in 2005, it kicked off a wave of similar legislation across the country that expanded the rights of civilians who use lethal force in self-defense, undoing the former requirement that they retreat from confrontation when possible

Again, Zimmerman's action has NOTHING to do with "Stand your ground".  He would have confronted Treyvon Martin even if Florida didn't have "stand your ground" laws becuase Zimmerman is a paranoid prick who profiles people and his actions are UNRELATED to "Stand your ground".

But Ms. Covert's idiocy doesn't end there. She expresses her dislike of "stand your ground with this

"it kicked off a wave of similar legislation across the country that expanded the rights of civilians who use lethal force in self-defense, undoing the former requirement that they retreat from confrontation when possible"

"Retreat from confrontation". WHAT WORLD ARE YOU LIVING IN MS. COVERT?

Someone who can OUTRUN YOU can easily slash your face in seconds! Someone who can OUTRUN you can put you in a choke-hold in seconds. And if you try to call 911, they can knock that phone out of your hands!

And they could EASILY rape someone like Covert, forcing her to a life with STDs and an unwanted pregnancies. And if Rick Santorum becomes president, you would NOT be allowed to do ANYTHING about your unwanted pregnancies resulting from a rape!

Bryce Covert
photo from The Nation
Bryce Covert, the lady that wants you to be defenseless against violent criminals

More nonsense from Covert.
The answer to a police force that is slow to respond, has the wrong priorities, or replicates racism is not to abolish it and put the law in the hands of individuals. The answer to an ineffective government is not to do away with it. The answer can only be reform. Because we can’t put these matters in private hands

This was my response that I placed on the comments to Covert's article

stand your ground laws IS NOT ABOUT GOING AFTER "the suspicious"

Stand your ground laws is about DEALING WITH THE POLITICALLY INCORRECT REALITY that the police (no matter how good they are) WILL NOT COME TO SAVE YOU IN TIME!

The police in Norway TOOK FOREVER to stop the Norway shooter last year!

The police DID NOTHING as looters ransacked London in 2011, Athens in 2008, New Orleans in 2005 and Los Angeles in 1992! The police DID NOTHING as the shooters were crazy in Mumbai in 2008!

There's NOTHING right-wing about wanting to defend yourself against serious threats when the police WILL NOT SAVE YOU IN TIME!

In fact, stand your ground laws can PROTECT minorities against hate-crime felons! That was part of the purpose of the Black Panthers, Brown Berets and the American Indian Movement, all about protecting minorities instead of this naive nonsense of "wait for the police to protect us"

There were plenty of similar responses to Covert's naive article on "we must rely on police instead of standing our ground". Those comments mentioned about police inaction, police brutality, police racism and police sexism.

So Covert followed her naive article with ANOTHER naive article.

http://www.thenation.com/blog/166943/despite-history-brutality-we-must-reform-not-abandon-police

In a piece I wrote yesterday about the killing of Trayvon Martin, I urged America not to turn its back on the government and put the law in private hands. Martin’s killer, George Zimmerman, is an example of how vigilante justice can (and does) go so wrong.

But many who responded felt that my solution—reforming the police force, rather than abandoning it—didn’t give enough airtime to the history of police brutality in this country.

(skipped paragraphs)

Now Covert expressed something SUPER-IDIOTIC

Stand your ground” laws are not an answer. Beyond encouraging vigilantes, they have coincided with a rise in “justifiable homicides.” Florida’s law was enacted in 2005; since 2007 those incidents have doubled. The laws embolden citizens to shoot first and ask later, in large part because they’re no longer required to retreat or try to resolve the conflict before using force. They have also extended the realm of self-defense from someone’s home to the public sphere, and they’ve been used to defend the use of force to protect property, not just personal safety.

That was the case with Joe Horn. Josh Barro pointed out that my first piece didn’t include the fact that the two men he shot were apparently in the midst of a robbery. But Horn’s decision to ignore the orders of the 911 operator and leave his house to take matters into his own hands—which meant shooting both men, killing them then and therewas just as repulsive whether these men had been robbing his neighbor or just standing around. Stealing property doesn’t warrant death. Horn’s actions were just plain wrong.

Look at what I highlighted in pink! Bryce Covert think it's "repulsive" and "wrong"  to shoot someone INTRUDING ON YOUR HOME! Bryce Covert think it's "repulsive" and "wrong" to shot someone WHO ARE TAKING YOUR STUFF IN YOUR OWN HOME!

In other words, Bryce Covert think "shooting an actual burglar = confronting some guy who was just walking by".

George Zimmerman thinks"shooting an actual burglar = confronting some guy who was just walking by"

In other words,  George Zimmerman and Bryce Covert (and her fellow radical left-wing lunatics at The Nation) are seriously lacking in common sense!

Bryce Covert
This woman (Bryce Covert)  wants you to WAIT FOREVER for the police while someone is INTRUDING IN YOUR HOUSE!

Also,   if you can't shoot burglars (as Covert wish), guess what! THERE WILL BE MORE BURGLARIES!

That's why in Canada (the all supposedly progressive and peaceful version of America), burglars are more likely to enter a home IN WHICH THE RESIDENT IS INSIDE than they would in the USA! Why? In the USA, we are more likely to shoot burglars!

http://www.davekopel.org/2A/LawRev/LawyersGunsBurglars.htm
It is axiomatic in the United States that burglars avoid occupied homes. As an introductory criminology textbook explains, "Burglars do not want contact with occupants; they depend on stealth for success." [FN8] Only thirteen percent of U.S. residential burglaries are attempted against occupied homes. [FN9] But this happy fact of life, so taken for granted in the United States, is not universal.
The overall Canadian burglary rate is higher than the American one, and a Canadian burglary is four times more likely to take place when the victims are home. [FN10]
(this is what Bryce Covert wants the USA to imitate)

And what the supposedly progressive and civilized Eruope?

Major European cities have had have WAY WAY WAY MORE RIOTS than the USA during the 21st century!

Why? Because, the last time we had a major riot in a large USA city (Los Angeles, 20 years ago), many store owners used their shotguns to stop looters! This sent a message to the looters  --- rob someone else! It also sent a message to future rioters -- next time, more store owners will be armed!  and it also sent a message to many other Americans  --- guns are useful in defending property, don't be unarmed in the next riot!

Some might want to bring up New Orleans in 2005, after Hurricane Katrina, when looting went rampant. However, most property owners had evacuated New Orleans before the hurricane, so there wasn't much people to protect the city!

But in this supposedly "regressive, uncivilized USA"  how many large-scale riots occurred since 2005? NONE!

In the supposedly "progressive, civilized Europe",  how many large-scale riots occurred since 2005? PLENTY!

Since 2005, large scale riots have occurred in Paris, London, Amsterdam, Rome, Madrid, Athens and Moscow, and much much more!

Meanwhile, it has been MULTIPLE DECADES since large-scale riots occurred in major US cities like Houston, Detroit, Miami, New York, Dallas, Atlanta, Washington DC, Philadelphia, Boston, Phoenix, Chicago or Saint Louis.  And it has TWO DECADES since the last time Los Angeles had a major riot!

Why? Because in the USA, you loot, you get shot!

But in the all-so-progressive Europe, LOOTERS DON'T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT GETTING SHOT! Looters don't have to worry about property owner TRULY STANDING THEIR GROUND!  So, Europeans riot WAY MORE OFTEN than Americans do!

Now, more idiocy from Ms Covert

The police force—with its ugly history of racism, sexism, and violence—can be made better. That has to be our goal. Because policing citizens is only a job for the government. The alternative, embodied by Zimmerman and Horn, will mean justice for very few.

This is what I wrote in the comment's section!

Reforming the police force takes forever! It requires YEARS of investigations, meetings, etc.

Meanwhile, someone who wants to slash your face (and possibly kill you and your kids) can do so in a few seconds. And they WILL knock that phone off your hands if you even dare to try call 911!

Wait for the police to reform? Might as well wait for eternity!
And not to mention, in those YEARS that it will take to "reform the police", elections will occur, new politicians take over bringing their new cronies to run things, and reform plans are put on hold! That's how "police reform" happen in the real world.
----------

There has been other writers at the excessively pacifist The Nation who demonized "stand your ground laws" over the Zimmerman case.

Those writers include Peter Rothberg, John Nichols and Mychal Denzel Smith!  This article is already long enough, so I'll just post how I responded to Smith's article

http://www.thenation.com/article/166887/justice-trayvon-martin

"Stand your ground" laws were NEVER about going after the "suspicious"

"stand your ground" laws are about allowing people to defend themselves by all means neccessary!

What Zimmerman had NOTHING to do with "stand your ground". He claims it does, but he would've been a racist killer regardless of if "stand your ground" exist! Zimmerman's action is NOT related to "stand your ground" and the leftists at the Nation are taking his bait by blaming "stand your ground" for that hate crime!
and

You want to know what "barbaric" is? I'll tell you what "barbaric" is.
Barbaric is forcing people to remain defenseless while they wait for ETERNITY for the police to arrive (and sometimes, eternity is meant to be taken literally because the police don't even bother to show up)

Barbaric is advocating massive defenseless while the police DO NOTHING while looters run rampant. (which is what police REALLY did during in LA in 1992, Athens in 2008, New Orleans in 2005, London in 2011)

I have mentioned those incidents in the following blog posts

This mentioned how the police DID NOTHING during the first few hours of the 2008 Mumbai shootings, 1992 LA riots, 2008 Athens riots, and 2005 New Orleans looting
http://pablowegesend.blogspot.com/2008/12/police-cant-protect-you-everytime.html

This blog post mentioned how the Norway police were TOTALLY USELESS when a white supremacist shooter went bezerk
http://pablowegesend.blogspot.com/2011/07/police-cant-protect-you-everytime.html

this blog post how the London police DID NOTHING the first few hours of the 2011 riots!
http://pablowegesend.blogspot.com/2011/09/police-cant-protect-you-everytime-uk.html

These blog posts totally disprove all this horse manure coming out of Bryce Covert and her allies at The Nation about "stand your ground"

"Stand your ground" is NOT about confronting "the suspicious" like what the paranoid lunatic George Zimmerman did!

"Stand your ground" is about allowing for self-defense, because in the real world, no matter how honorable your favorite police officer, THEY MIGHT NOT GET THERE IN TIME TO SAVE YOU!

Either pick a side, mediate or get out of the way

I was hoping I wouldn't have to post a follow-up to my blog post "exposed to the light" but screw it, I gotta do it

Here's that "exposed to the light" blog post
http://pablowegesend.blogspot.com/2012/03/exposed-to-light.html

---

I have recieved an e-mail from a friend who thinks  his advice like  "dont let it get to you", "forget about it", "let it go" are going to help!

That type of advice DOES NOT WORK ON SOMEONE WHO IS ANGRY!

It will only increase that person's anger, but this time, IT WILL BE DIRECTED AT YOU for giving such "high-minded" nonsense!

Advice like "dont let it get to you", "forget about it", "let it go"   is just like telling someone "just surrender to your enemies and kiss their ass", "your grievances aren't important" , "I will tell you how to feel"

I also felt like I'm being told "You need to hold things in forever!" and "don't hold others accountable for mistreating you"  and "don't stand up for yourself"

Those words can be taken as Fighting Words!
-------------

I'm sure that friend had the best intentions.  Me &that friend go way back, to our middle school years.

However,  I never asked that friend for his opinion on my "Exposed to the Light" blog post

He thought his unsolicited advice would help! It won't, it's just a bunch of USELESS CLICHE'S!

So, if you notice someone is angry, either

1) pick a side in the conflict

or

2) mediate and set up a peace talk

or

3)shut up &  just get out of the way

The end of the Dana Takahara-Dias era

Earlier this month, UH women's basketball coach Dana Takahara-Dias was fired after 3 losing seasons in a row.

(photo from Star Advertiser link below)
Dana Takahara-Dias

http://www.staradvertiser.com/sportspremium/20120308_wahine_hoops_coach_fired.html

She was originally hired back in 2009 to replace Jim Bolla.

Jim Bolla was not just a loser on win-loss records, Bolla was also an abusive jerk that has been to use vicious insults on his players and even kicked one of them!

I wrote a blog post on that issue back in April 25, 2009
http://pablowegesend.blogspot.com/2009/04/jim-bolla-fired.html

--------

So Dana Takahara-Dias was hired in part to fix the wounds left behind by Jim Bolla!

However, there were many questions about Takahara-Dias qualifications when she was hired.

Yes, she was former UH basketball player!

Yes, she had coaching experience!

But that experience was at the high school level!

Coaching at the college level is a lot more intense. There is recruiting, there is long-distance traveling (especially for Hawaii), students who are more independent, and of course, the much higher pressure to win.

---------

Another issue that comes up is with attendance.

There isn't much of a crowd at UH Wahine basketball games.

Yes, Hawaii fan DO support women's sports!

Just look at the UH Wahine volleyball games! They got the HIGHEST number in attendance IN ALL OF women's college volleyball!

Women's volleyball in Hawaii makes a financial profit! (not true at most other schools)

And the UH Wahine softball team has had big crowds at their games this season.

So the low attendance at  UH women's basketball games has NOTHING to do with gender and EVERYTHING to do with winning & losing!

It all reminds me of what I remember reading from  (ex-football coach) Bob Wagner's book in which he said about fans/customers/ recruits/ etc.

People want to gain good feeling and avoid bad feelings

Which is why fans are willing to crowd the stadiums for winning teams! And why fans will not show up to watch losing teams.

It explains why fans love to crowd the stadiums to watch the very successful  UH Wahine volleyball and softball teams.

It also explains the low attendance at UH Wahine basketball games, as well as declining attendance at UH football games towards the end of last season!

And with the economy not being that great, it was even more important for the UH Athletic Department to find a coach that can get the UH Wahine basketball winning, and getting fans into the arena!
-----

And there's the challenge of recruiting of UH Wahine basketball!

In Hawaii, the dominant sport for female athletes is volleyball!

It is a different story in many parts of the continental US, where in many urban areas in the Northeast, Midwest, and West Coast, basketball tends to be the dominant sport for both males and females.

And even with the successful female high school basketball players from Hawaii, not all of them want to play for UH. Like athletes in many other sports, some of want the continental experience  instead of playing for UH!

And to recruit female basketball players from the continental US, it will be hard to convince them to play college basketball at  a place where they'll usually get less hype than the mega-popular Wahine volleyball team!

This is NOT to say it's "all a doomed effort".

UH  Wahine basketball had some success in the past when Vince Goo was the coach. He was able to recruit the top local talent as well as some outside talent as well.

That success should be repeated again.

Hopefully, they'll get someone who has college coaching experience, can recruit Hawaii and outside, and can bring fans back to the arena!

exposed to the light

What happens to the roaches when you turn on the lights?

Usually, they run and hide! They can't the stand being exposed to the light!

Bullies can't stand a different form of light! They can't stand being exposed!

If you watch the TV news, reporters will try to confront those accused of  pollution, discrimination, workplace abuse, family abuse, fraud or other wrong doing!

Guess what those trouble makers do?

They'll put their hands on the TV cameras, or block the reporters from entering, or they just run and hide.

They just can't handle being exposed to the light.

----------

Which is why some chump who goes by the name of Cris Sison Aban (aka Crisanto Aban) told me to take down my blog post about him, which you can check out at

http://pablowegesend.blogspot.com/2010/11/blocked-out-of-my-list.html

Had that guy simply apologized for being rude and disrespectful, THAT BLOG POST WOULD NEVER BEEN PUT UP!

But no, when I told him why I rejected him from my facebook list, he said "Ha Ha Ha ... f*** you then" and called me a "loner"

Well, if that's how he wants to act, then he will be exposed to the light!

Mr Aban doesn't show any remorse, he just asks me to take my blog post down?

NO I am
NOT taking that blog post down!

If Mr Aban didn't want to be exposed to the world like that, he should have thought about it before acting with total disrespect!

If Mr Aban wants to be mad about this situation, he should just be mad at himself!

-------------------------

I'm done with Mr Aban for now, unless he wants to start more drama!

However, I'm just going to expose more wrong-doers to the light!

and I AM USING REAL NAMES!  I  refuse to protect the guilty with fake names here!

I know some of you will give me this BS like "dont let it bother you" and all this other high-minded crap!

But this "don't let it bother you" crap does more harm than good!

Bullies prosper with this "dont let it bother you" crap!

Those who start trouble need to be held accountable!

Plus, it's not healthy to hold things in!

Also,  accepting this "dont let it bother you" crap is for Ass Kisser!

I have NOTHING BUT CONTEMPT for those who encourage Ass Kissing

1) Classmates

first the middle school classmates

-- To those guys in middle schools for stereotyping me being a "foreigner"  because I don't "look local" and told me to "speak English" if I sometimes mumble words  ---- I'm exposing you to the light now!
People like Kevin Komoto, Richard Ching, Alika Wong, Young In (Brian) Ko! Look at your last names, I like see you guys go to Idaho or Mississippi and see if anyone there considers you guys "real Americans" HA!

--s!

--- if you're going to diss your classmates for sucking at PE, you better be Olympic or pro-sports material! Otherwise SHUT UP! That goes for Clinton Hurst, Alan Kato, Angela Muraoka, Justin Irvine, Johnson Lee, Jon Rota, Lawrence Kim, Eric Kwong, Anolani Kaio, and whoever I forgot to mention!

None of those chumps made it to the Olympics! None of those chumps made it to the Pros! None of those champs made it to the NCAAs. In fact, none of those chumps even made high school All-Stars!

---
Lauren Kihara  -- rude girl from middle school. Called me a "gorilla" for growing body hairs at an early age! She shouldn't talk since her face looked like clam chowder!  (I would NOT be mentioning that had she been a nicer person)

She  liked to act tough! But
she screamed in terror when James Wolford put a lizard right in front of her face! She's lucky YouTube didn't exist back then!

---
Lauren Kihara, Anolani Kaio (mentioned those 2 already) plus Ryan Tsuda, Ikaika Poki and William Reyes all accussed me of "not using deodorant" when someone noticed sweat in my shirt sleeves.

Time for exposing them to the light because their attitudes are what really stinks!

Ryan Tsuda likes to act  all tough! Which was why I laughed when I heard that punk got beaten up by Kalen, who was SMALLER than him!
Ikaika Poki was his Ryan's partner in crime. Poki also likes to victimize others, but I remember seeing him acting all scared in aikido class when a more advanced student wanted to challenge him!
William Reyes first stereotyped me as "retarded" yet later on begged me for help with his math work, when it was obvious his "intellect" was NOT up to standard! I also remembered seeing on his history tests lying on the classroom floors! His answers were SO FAR OFF that I tried not to laugh!

----

Those are what I call the "studio gangsters", "wanabees" and "wankstas". They are fake thugs who only pick on those who don't have any rough peers to back them up. Those fake thugs run from a real fight with a real gangsta.

They included Waiokeola Ching, Jared Tsukamoto, Travis Slavens, Gary Okimoto.

the funniest stories about them include

--- Gary Okimoto, talks tough, acts tough until ............ he got slapped around by Binh Van
(a real G) and James O.   Then Gary cried for mercy and says "I'm going to sue you".

-- Jared Tsukamoto likes to literally push people around.  But he only does so when walking in a group. He did it one time to me and said "move n----- " (in other words, Jared Tsukamoto can't even get his racial slurs right)  But he ran like heck and screamed after teasing really tall guy Colin.

-- Travis Slavens calls me the "hairy boy". He's only tough when he's in a group!  He's soft without a group! The same is true for Waiokeola Ching.

There was also this guy named Laau Castro. I didn't know him until I accidentally bumped into him in the cafeteria and got juice spilled on him.  I understand his frustration, but that little wanksta later brought his friends to back him up. Yeah, little guy is only tough with a group. Later on, we made peace and had no problems. But I want to say this --- #1 accidents happen, just chill!  #2 you got a problem, handle it yourself, instead of calling for backup!

----

There was also  David Arashiro. Imagine having 6 classes with a sumo-sized guy with a bad attitude. That was my situation with David Arashiro in 6th grade. It was so bad, that it was one of the few times I actually went to the office about being bullied. We had a conference with the counselors about this issue.  We never really made peace, but the good news was that we had no classes together in 7th grade. In 8th grade, he went to a different school.

But the funniest story in 6th grade was when David Arashiro was laughing out loud in the cafeteria, an 8th grader told him "shut up you fat f---".   David Arashiro was too scared to say anything back.

---
Also, in 6th grade, Phillip Austin stereotyped me of "being from Mexico". Looking at him, I could easily stereotype him as being from Europe. In fact, the other kids kept making fun of him for being a "haole". I don't condone anti-white racism (or any type of racism). But Austin wants respect, he ought to show some respect.
--

, there was also this girl Jodie Ebesu who was so mad that (gasp ..........omg...............no) that I didn't let her cut in front in the lunch line, she responded by calling me a "hairy d--k".   How's that for sexual harassment! We ended up going to different high schools, but I did hear some very nasty rumors from those who went to high school with her.

Now on to high school!

While high school wasn't as bad as middle school, there's still a few people who needs to be exposed to the light!

-- Clinton Hurst, (who I met in middle school but also went to my high school) who tried to start fights with me in 9th grade, but he couldn't take me down! Likes to use vicious insults on others who don't conform to his phony version of cool! Mistaking me as "Arab" when I'm, Latino! And acted surprised when I knew more about hip-hop than him, that Eminem wanabee! Well, that tough stuff has its limits, especially when a bunch of Southeast Asian gangsters mobbed him and took out one of his eyes!

--- Sai Feng, a fake gangsta! In the PE locker rooms, he tried to be the funny guy by yelling "stop looking, or I'll bang your head in the locker". The only thing I was looking at was my own locker! But being that the lockers are set up where you can't see what's going on in the other side, but you can definitely hear what's being said, I took Sai Feng's "joke" as an act of war! The worst thing to do to any straight male is falsely accusse them of "looking" in a locker room!  And Mr " I'll bang your hear in the locker" walked away when I started to yell at him and I called him a "wanabee gangsta".

That was so rare for me to do that! I usually avoid fights, but Sai Feng went too far!

Sai Feng is only tough when he's in a group and I'm not! But if I'm with someone and he's not, he does nothing! Pathetic!

Sai's little friend Min Hwan Shin --  a true wanksta! He jokes about my body hair, but at least I ain't short like him! ( Again, I would NOT have bring that up had he been a nicer person!)

---Dominic Gomes - a Vanilla Ice wanabee with a rude attitude! Had a conflict with him during high school graduation practice!  I was thinking about fighting him, but that would've meant getting suspended from an important event!

Gomes even bragged to about to the wrong person. He thought Adam Chang was going to laugh along with him! Gomes didn't know that Adam Chang was my friend! Oooops! Yeah Dominic Gomes you dumbass be careful who you brag to!

--  Wayne Fernando. He tried to reach into my pockets without my permissions. He said "I want your money" in a weird voice.  I yelled at him with full-blown rage!   He thought he was going to impress his friends, but they didn't back him up! They knew he was in the wrong!

---

In a social studies class we were supposed to make groups. I didn't have a group, so I ended with Jasmine Kamaka, U'ilani Hicks, and Lori Mikasobe. Well, later on, the teacher said "there's too many people in this group".  What to do, what to do?  Well, those 3 people all of a sudden ran off to another table (with the whole class watching) and gave a BS apology.  I don't accept BS apologies!   Then U'ilani Hicks said I was "too quiet"
. No, she just talks too much about uninteresting crap!   You want me talking, then talk to me about something interesting dammit or shut up!  And dont go on pretending to by my friend afterwards. I don't respect phonies!

----------

Outside Classmates

As for 2 aikido classmates from my teen years -- James McGhee and John Hishashima who liked to joke about "tacos" and "nachos", nothing brave about doing that in Hawaii!  Try doing that in a California prison where the Mexican Mafia dominates the gangsta scene!

2) Teachers

I got love for most of my teachers but some need to be exposed to the light! This was especially true for a few that worked at my middle school (Kawananakoa)! I also heard from those 2 left a few years after I left the school.

One is Mr Anjo, a 6th grade math teacher who liked to pit students against each other! He screams when he saw papers that he thought was messy! He accussed me "not knowing what a ruler is" because some lines I drew weren't straight.

In 8th grade, being that I grew facial hair earlier than other kids, Mr Anjo tried to be funny by saying "look, here's a razor".  He's lucky that I didn't try to slash him with it!

Mocking students like what Mr Anjo does is the  ultimate scumbag move! Middle schoolers are going through changes that they still do not truly understand! It takes a total scumbag like Mr Anjo to shit on not just on any person, but especially kids who might not have the support they need!

I was happy to hear that a few years after I graduated from middle school, that Mr Anjo was no longer there! Good Riddance

---
Another punk ass teacher from the same school was Mr. Komae who teaches wood shop! Whereas that class would probably be an elective at most schools, for some reason it was a requirement at my middle school.

Komae is one of those who gets moody when students try hard but are struggling with the lesson! He also comes with irritating nicknames for people, even when they don't even want it! Which only encourages the other students to join the mockery! Yet, he got SO SENSITVE when students called him "papio" for looking like a fish! If Komae wants respect, he should learn to show it!

Komae was also creepy by trying to kiss the girls IN CLASS! If YouTube existed then, he would've been caught and FIRED!

Like Anjo, Komae was gone a few years after I graduated from middle school! Maybe he did get fired after all!

----
Hasuko also liked to give stupid nicknames to people, but that's not what stood out!

I remember one boy (who was one of the nicest kids I knew) spit on the hallway's floor (NOT AT ANY PERSON)! Mr Hasuko start yelling at that boy and screamed "WANT ME TO KICK YOUR ASS?"

All that boy did was spit on the floor. All Hasuko could've done is ask that boy to get a tissue and clean it up, not yelling out threats!

================

I have already exposed the scrooges, the bully professors and slanderers on my earlier blog posts!

I also have detailed the problems I had with my father when I growing up in previous blogs! Luckily, I've made my peace with him, after finally telling him the truth about how I felt about him growing up! He seems to understand where he went wrong!

But I can't be credible as "someone who stands up for what's right" if I'm not calling out names of those I should've been more confrontational with back in the days!

And if any of you mentioned in the blog don't like what I said in my blog , YOU SHOULD HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT THAT BACK IN THE DAYS! Start being mad at yourself!

In fact, you LUCKY that I haven't become a celebrity (YET!) because you wouldn't be able to hide! Just like the guy who once bullied Eminem during their childhood days got all scared when Eminem publicly called him out! He tried to sue Eminem for exposing the light!  After all, how would you like if your former victims has MILLIONS of fans ready to pounce!

If you want to aplogize, I'm cool with it! If you feel I offended you too, please remind me what I did, after all I ain't perfect!

But don't give me this "dont let it bother you" crap, this "get over it" crap or this "please take my name off your  blog" crap, because that will only guarantee more fire from me on this blog!

The only way to stop me from saying more stuff on this blog is to kill me! What are you waiting for?
