Let's bring Syrian refugees to Hawaii

Hawaii likes to pride itself about "diversity" and "being multi-cultural"

But Hawaii isn't immune to irrational bigotry towards people they're not familiar with!

Earlier this week, Hawaii's governor David Ige said that he is willing to accept having some Syrian refugees coming to Hawaii!


People went ballistic over that!

And not your stereotypical Anglo-Americans who recite the conspiracy nonsense of Ann Coulter and Donald Trump!

We're talking about Hawaiians, Filipinos, Samoans, Japanese,Portuguese and other minorities objecting to having some Syrian refugees coming in!

That's right, minorities who have been stigmatized a century ago are now doing the stigmatizing! 

That's right, groups that were once stigmatized and stereotyped for being criminals are now stigmatizing potential Syrian immigrants for being "dangerous" 

And the other excuses are even more mind-blowing.

They say "we can't take in more people, we have homeless people here to take care of"

Oh yeah?

Much of the online hatred is expressed using tools like Macs, iPhones, iPads, and Safari, all of which are produced by Apple, a technology company started by a son of a Syrian immigrant! 

That's right, Steve Jobs is a son of a Syrian immigrant. Don't let his last name fool you, he was adopted by an Anglo family!

Many of those objecting to Syrian refugees call themselves "Christians"! But Mary was pregnant with Jesus Christ when she was looking for shelter while traveling. She and Joseph were rejected several times. 

And guess where that happened?  In the Middle East, not far from Syria

Cuban refugees benefitted from an extremely lenient immigration policy, mostly due to US being in opposition to the communist dictator Fidel Castro!  The same was true for the Vietnamese/Laotian/Hmong/Cambodians escaping the communists after the US military failed to stabilize their homelands!

But Marco Rubio, whose family benefitted from the very lenient immigration policy, doesn't want to expand those benefits to other people who need the same type of help he got!  Severe hypocrite!

Same is also true about Ted Cruz, another son of a Cuban refugee that wants to ban Syrian refugees. Cruz says "why, we don't know who might be terrorists hiding among refugees".

But Ted Cruz also admitted his father was fighting on Fidel Castro's side before switching sides and running for his life!

The Syrian refugees are going through a very tedious screening process that most of us can't even handle!

The officials, who spoke to reporters on the condition of anonymity, said they think people may be unaware of how the screening system works -- already an 18- to 24-month process on average that includes biometric and biographic tests, interviews and other vetting procedures by a number of U.S. security agencies.

Medical tests
Refugee applicants go through a health screening to ensure they don't have a contagious medical condition, such as tuberculosis, or other health problems that require follow-up screening once they arrived in the U.S. 
Checking information
This is a challenging part. The Departments of State and Homeland Security work with the FBI, the Department of Defense and other security agencies to check whether the information provided by applicants is true.
The government compares their stories and information with the file from UNHCR, to see if they've been consistent. Some cases are flagged for USCIS's Fraud Detection and National Security Unit for individualized screening, such as looking at whether their stories correlate with what was happening on the ground at the time, the second official said. They similarly investigate the explanations people provide if they do not have identification.
Syrians also go through an enhanced review with USCIS refugee specialists in the U.S., the second official said.

ontrary to asylum seekers who show up at America’s doorstep like the Latin American minors fleeing violence, refugees need a referring agency — generally the UN High Commissioner for Refugees but sometimes the U.S. embassy or an NGO — to refer them to America. This agency has to perform its own screening before recommending someone. Just this stage takes four to 10 months and the UNHCR usually refers less than 1 percent of the applications it receives.
After that, even refugees from non-terrorist countries are lucky if they can get a clearance from American officials in a year.
But because Syrians are coming from ISIS land they are subjected to a special third-degree that can take another two to three years. As Vox’s Dara Lind points out, they have to prove a negative and show that they are not affiliated with any terrorist group. Until recently, if they had any contact whatsoever with a jihadi no matter how unknowing or innocuous — which is virtually unavoidable if your hometown has been overrun by terrorists — they were denied admissions. There have been cases when folks have been rejected because they might have served a jihadi who showed up at their sandwich shop.
Setting that aside, after a UN referral, a refugee still has a dozen or so other hurdles to cross. These include, as per USCIS website
  • A Security Clearance Process that involves the State Department running the names of all the refugees referred through a standard CLASS (Consular Lookout and Support System) name check. In addition, enhanced interagency security checks were phased in beginning in 2008 and applied to all refugee applicants by 2010.
  • Certain refugees undergo an additional security review called a Security Advisory Opinion (SAO). These cases require a positive SAO clearance from a number of U.S. law enforcement and intelligence agencies in order to continue the resettlement process.
  • Refugees who meet the minimum age requirement have their fingerprints and photograph taken by a trained U.S. government employee. The fingerprints are then checked against various U.S. government databases and information on any matches is reviewed by DHS.
  • All refugee applicants are interviewed by an officer from DHS’s U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) who may travel to the country of asylum to conduct a detailed, face-to- face interview with each refugee applicant. Based on the information in the refugee’s case file and on the interview, the DHS officer will determine if the individual qualifies as a refugee and is admissible under U.S. law.
  • If the USCIS officer finds that the individual qualifies as a refugee and meets other U.S. admission criteria, the officer will conditionally approve the refugee’s application for resettlement and submit it to the U.S. Department of State for final processing.
  • If approved, the refugee will be required to undergo medical screening conducted by the International Organization for Migration or a physician designated by the U.S. Embassy.
  • Prior to departure to the U.S., a second interagency check is conducted for most refugees to check for any new information.
  • Upon arrival at one of five U.S. airports designated as ports of entry for refugee admissions, a Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer will review the refugee documentation and conduct additional security check.
As all of this shows, the process ain’t no stroll in the park and at the end of it lies rejection for the vast majority of applicants. To think that ISIS agents will subject themselves to it only to face either rejection or detection or both is patently absurd.



That's at least 8 steps Syrian refugees have to go through! You think you can handle any of them?


So.. you'll going to tell me that the Syrian refugees aren't being screened?

Or are you just a racist fool who only think in stereotypes?

This is in response to these idiot activists who got bent out of shape when the University of Louisville President dressed like a Mexican for Halloween!

I am of part-Mexican ancestry and I have absolutely zero problem with non-Mexicans playing Mexican characters for Halloween!


These idiot activists who protested against such costumes DO NOT SPEAK FOR ME!

The end of the Norm Chow era

On Halloween 2015, UH football team had a scary experience, with another huge loss in front of  many empty seats at Aloha Stadium!

As I was watching the TV screen at the Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center, I posted the following on facebook

Well, the next day it happened! Norm Chow was fired!



While I long thought Norm Chow was poison to the program, I also had this to say on facebook!

(note: OK, before I go on, I just want to clarify what a "Dre Day dance" is for those unfamiliar with 90's era gangsta rap! "Dre Day dance" occurs towards the end of the "Dre Day" video where Dr Dre dissed Eazy-E, the character playing Eazy-E was dancing with the sign "Will Rap for Food")



Usually, I would favor the Athletics Department wait until the end of the season before making coaching changes. Coaching changes during the season is very disruptive, and is usually done just to appease angry fans!


On the other hand, I am glad Norm Chow is gone from the program. He was poison to the program that goes way beyond "wins & loses"!

One of the first things he did when he was hired to be UH football coach was to ban his players from having long hair!


He also got rid of the coolest mascot in college sports : Vili the Warrior

However, there are conspiracy theories that Vili the Warrior was "pushed out" by the UH athletic department and the new coach.

There is no evidence on that, but I understand why such conspiracy theories came out!

For one thing, the new UH football coach started imposing regulations on the player's grooming style.

Under the new rules, the UH football players will no longer be allowed to have long hair,  WHICH IS THE MOST STUPIDEST RULE ON EARTH!

The long hair was a major part of the UH-Warrior mystique in the previous decade. It made the UH haka/ha'a more real when the Warriors had the wild hair while making their chants!

Coach Chow claimed it was about "player safety" mentioning the long hair and football helmets interfere with each other.

But then, why did Chow also banned the players having beards or earings, both of which are covered under the helmets and therefore, had ZERO impediment to "player safety"?

Chow has learned that only part of his duties are on the field. Since being hired in December, he assembled a staff, dealt with such matters as fertilizer purchases for the practice field, and imposed a list of no-nos: No long hair, no beards, no earrings, no tardiness.


 In other words, Coach Chow wants to change the UH Warriors image.  Boooooo!

Some will say "who cares about image, we just want to win".


However, the reality is that marketing is a MAJOR part of college sports!

That's why teams have mascots representing wild animals or warriors (ie Trojans, Spartans, and of course, the UH Warriors.)

They need an agressive image that the fans want to be a part of.

They need an image that the upcoming recruits want to join in!

That's why UH went from Rainbows to Warriors!

That's why we had Vili the Warrior!

That's why the wild hair was so cool!  It gave the team a "rock n roll" edge mixed in with the traditional Polynesian warrior image.

The traditional Polynesian warriors didn't have crew cuts!

So there's no reason for Coach Chow to go against that tradition. Coach Chow is bringing the worst aspect of  the 1800's  missionary mentality with his rules against long, wild hair and beards!

Some will say "this long hair, short hair stuff is just superstition".

The rules against long hair was also bad luck to the Native Americans recruited to fight in the US war in Vietnam

“THE TRUTH ABOUT LONG HAIR”

As I read the documents, I learned why. It seems that during the Vietnam War, special forces in the war department had sent undercover experts to comb American Indian Reservations looking for talented scouts, for tough young men trained to move stealthily through rough terrain. They were especially looking for men with outstanding, almost supernatural tracking abilities. Before being approached, these carefully selected men were extensively documented as experts in tracking and survival.


With the usual enticements, the well-proven smooth phrases used to enroll new recruits, some of these Indian trackers were then enlisted. Once enlisted, an amazing thing happened. Whatever talents and skills they had possessed on the reservation seemed to mysteriously disappear, as recruit after recruit failed to perform as expected in the field.
Serious causalities and failures of performance led the government to contract expensive testing of these recruits, and this is what was found.


When questioned about their failure to perform as expected, the older recruits replied consistently that when they received their required military haircuts, they could no longer ‘sense’ the enemy, they could no longer access a ‘sixth sense,’ their ‘intuition’ no longer was reliable, they couldn’t ‘read’ subtle signs as well or access subtle extrasensory information.


So the testing institute recruited more Indian trackers, let them keep their long hair, and tested them in multiple areas. Then they would pair two men together who had received the same scores on all the tests. They would let one man in the pair keep his hair long, and gave the other man a military haircut. Then the two men retook the tests.
Time after time the man with long hair kept making high scores. Time after time, the man with the short hair failed the tests in which he had previously scored high scores.


 Some will still insist it is all superstition! I look at results! The results are that those from Native American and Polynesian cultures value long hair as part of the warrior mystique! Suppressing that part of the mystique is equivalent to saying "eff your culture, you are colonized now!"! Suppressing that part of the mystique suppressing the warrior spirit needed to rally and win games!


It's just like current University of Texas football coach Charlie Strong banning his players from owning guns! Hello, you're in Texas, fool!  Strong calls it "discipline"! I call it a suppression of his player's culture!  It's equivalent to telling his players "eff your Texas culture". And we wonder why the once powerful University of Texas team has dramatically declined the last few years!  And the other Texas schools are laughing at the University of Texas!

So why else is Norm Chow poison to the program?

Norm Chow was a good assistant coach. He is not head coach material. That much was said when a reporter who knew Chow from his BYU days wrote

 At one point, I ventured my opinion: Stick with an assistant’s job, I told him; he was too thin-skinned to be a head coach. He would hate it. I had been around him enough to know that he collected grudges against fellow coaches and media, and he dreaded talking to reporters. Why not do what he does best — run offenses? Why tempt the Peter Principle? Not all good assistant coaches make good head coaches. A head coach has to be able to deal with media and criticism and a lot of things that Chow doesn’t like and that have nothing to do with coaching, which brings me to …

then the writer mentioned how then-BYU head coach LaVell Edwards was better able to deal with the press.

That article came up because earlier this year, Norm Chow yelled with rage when a mildly-critical sportswriter Dave Reardon showed up to practice.


Chow, who later apologized, told the Honolulu Star-Advertiser that he was angry about a column that Reardon had written that was critical of the coach’s decision to hire Kevin Clune, the Utah State linebackers coach, as defensive coordinator (even coaches with 4-20 records can’t be second-guessed).
Predictably, that backfired. Don’t like negative coverage? Then create more. Reardon’s column the next day ran at the top of Page 1: “Coach’s tantrum adds another loss to bleak record.” Talk about a gift for a columnist who is looking for something to write about during the dull spring season. 

Add to all that,



  • Norm Chow's stupid rule against player's long hair (nevermind that the great teams of the June Jones era had long, wild hair) 
  • his slander of Blake Muir transferring because he had "no friends on the team"
  • his saying he won't be easy on his QBs, whereas June Jones hired Dan Morrison as QB coach to be "the soothing voice in the quarterback's ear".
  • and of course, his inability to beat good teams

And to add to that, when there was a hurricane warning in 2014, when the university had to cancel classes, when most workplaces were closed, Norm Chow insisted on continuing football practice sessions!




Heavy rain, strong wind and the threat of power outages will not prevent the University of Hawaii football team from practicing Friday.


"We'll find a place to practice," head coach Norm Chow said following Thursday's fourth session of training camp. "If we have to go inside, we'll go inside. We have to do something."


Klum Gym is the only indoor facility that can accommodate the Warriors. Klum, which has wooden floors, is used mostly for intramural basketball and volleyball events.


Chow joked that Washington, UH's season-opening opponent on Aug. 30, is not likely to agree to a ceasefire until the weather improves.


"Nobody is feeling bad for Hurricane Iselle," Chow said, "and nobody is feeling sorry for our team. Washington isn't going to stop practicing. We have to keep working."




In other words, a game is more important to Norm Chow than the safety of his players!



Norm Chow had to be ordered by UH administration to cancel practice


 head coach Norm Chow and the rest of the coaching staff were ordered off the field as a directive from the UH administration. Organized team activities, such as practice, would not be allowed due to the campus closure.

Winds of up to 60 miles per hour and torrential rain soaked the island state overnight. On Thursday, UH administration closed all of its campuses on Friday, including the Manoa campus. The weather held up for much of the team's practice until a downpour during the final minutes of the one-hour workout.

While the players "chose" to practice after Chow was ordered off the field, I put "chose" in quotation marks, because I think Chow pressured the team to continue practice just to show his bosses he can't be bossed around!


If I was the coach, I'll just tell the team "Go home already! Take care of your family!"

And of course, in sports, it's all about wins & loses!


Norm Chow was supposed to be a replacement for Coach Mack. Mack was "retired" after one slightly-below average season (2011) that followed a very great season (2010). The 2010 team had great offensive players in their final year. 2011 was a rebuilding year with inexperienced offensive players. The defense was great and experienced, but the offense was inexperienced! But the fans were so spoiled by the success of the June Jones era that even a slightly-below average season (2011) that followed a very great season (2010) was a firing offense!

I really felt Coach Mack should've been given another chance! To those who didn't agree, I point the finger at you for putting us in this Norm Chow mess!


Every singe season under Coach Mack was better than ANY season under Norm Chow!


Coach Mack's assistants (ie Dave Aranda, Nick Rolovich) had great success at other universities after Coach Mack was "retired"


While I'm not sure if Coach Mack (or even June Jones) is willing to come back to UH! But I really think we should try get Dave Aranda or Nick Rolovich to come back and take over!


Some might ask for Rich Miano or Cal Lee to take over! But since they were coaching high school the last few years, I think it will be better for Aranda or Rolovich to take over the UH team since they had more recent college coaching experience!

I admit in another blog post that I thought Norm Chow bringing back the Tight End (TE)  & Fullback(FB) positions to the team was going to help!  Whereas June Jones & Coach Mack were successful with undersized guys (ie Chad Owens, Davone Bess, Kealoha Pilares, Micheal Brewster,  Britton Komine, etc) playing  a major role in the offense, I thought that maybe (just maybe), adding  a TE and a FB would bring some size to balance the smaller guys on the team. However, Norm Chow just phased out the remaining small guys (ie Miah Ostrowski) and not replacing the small guys who graduated!


The next coach will probably have to bring back to small overlooked guys back in the mix, while still keeping the TE and FB to bring the muscle and the balance to the offense!

The next coach will most likely have to accept the Rainbow symbol! June Jones got rid of the Rainbow symbol because he thought it was "gay". Years after he left, former Athletics Director Ben Jay brought the Rainbow symbol back! At this point, there will NOT be any patience with anyone getting rid of Rainbow symbol for being "gay".

Racially Integrated Halloween parties

A lot of these so-called "social justice warriors" (aka phony justice morons) complain that wearing a costume from another culture is "culturally insensitive".


Well, a lot of people who were at the Halloween party at Hyatt Regency Waikiki don't believe that at all!

 Here were some crazy costumes I saw at the Hyatt Regency last Saturday!

By the way, I need to take another shot at those so-called "social justice wariors" (aka - phony justice morons) who claim certain costumes are "culturally offensive" ---- this was a racially integrated Halloween party and people wore tons of costumes portraying characters of another race and .........................everyone enjoyed themselves and had a good time! No fights, no drama! What more could you ask!

As you could see from those photos, it was a real racially integrated party, with lots of Europeans, Asians, Africans, Polynesians, even a few Latinos like me! And even a few of those of Middle Eastern and Indian descent in the mix!

I see non-African-Americans being Eazy-E, non-Latinos wearing traditional Mexican blankets, non-Europeans being "Batman & Robin"  and much, much more and ......................nobody expressed objections at all!

Remember, this is an event where alcohol is served, if someone had an objection, there would've been a bloody brawl! But there was no brawl, not even an argument! 


It was "hey cool costume", "hey look at that guy", "hey look at that chick", "hey, that's Eazy-E", "hey, those are the Minions", "hey, it's Wonder Woman", "hey, it's Ronda Roussey" and more!



You see, most people have this thing called ..............................(gasp.............................omg.............nooooooooo!) a sense of humor!

Mature, confident people have a sense of humor about themselves!

I sure had a sense of humor when I saw non-Mexicans wore the traditional Mexican blankets! And I'm half-Mexican!



This is NOT about  being  "Uncle Tom" or "vendido"   it's called being an emotionally secure person!


As for me, I had a Jack-o-Lantern hat






I hope it didn't offend all the pumpkins out there!

Halloween is not meant to be taken seriously

I'm NOT one of those people who think everything is a joke, nor will I pretend that "I never get offended by anything.


That being said, some people do get overly-sensitive about Halloween costumes!

Old enough to be president

Today, it's official. I am now old enough to be the President of the United States. 

35 years old! In my mid-30s. Approaching middle age!

Time has flied too fast!




Here's a few thoughts



1) It's all made for those younger than me now


All that pop culture stuff? It's all made for those younger than me now!

It's not about me saying "everything new sucks, I want to just stick with the stuff of the past".  There's always good music coming out and there's always new interesting technology coming out.  It's just marketed to those younger than me now!


2) Feeling old on a college campus

While I'm a graduate student working on my master's, I am usually working in the daytime, and going to the UH-Manoa campus in the evenings! That plus the weekends.  Usually at those times when the campus is nearly empty.  That's how it's mostly been for the last 2 years.


But for this semester, I'm on the UH-Manoa campus during the daytime twice a week for an on-campus internship! So now, I'm on the campus when the campus is full and when the undergraduate students are out in full force.  Yep, I'm surrounded by those who just come out of high school................who were born when I was in high school!

I mean, I was already used to a generation gap when I was working as a substitute teacher, but that's because I was working with kids!  Now, I'm feeling the generation gap with young adults.

My generation didn't grow up with social media, smartphones, laptops or tablets (ie iPads, Surface)! The Internet didn't even become mainstream until I was in high school, though I didn't use that until after high school!  The new young adults experienced using  all of those things from childhood!


Even though I'm using online technology (especially to write this blog post), I still write most of my notes on a paper, and would rather read from a paper than a screen.  I still be reading from a newspaper every morning. Yeah, I share articles on facebook, but the newspaper has them all together (or at least what the editors feel is appropriate to add).



3) Now on to the Presidency

Now that I'm old enough to be President, here's a few things on my agenda


  • withdraw troops from overseas bases. Time to defend America first, and time for the rest of the world to pay for their own defense
  • Legalize all immigration ............or at least make immigration policy much more lenient! 
  • End the militarized war on drugs.  Sending SWAT teams to stop drugs is a waste of resources and has come with too much risk of violating civil liberties (ie mass incarceration, racial profiling, police brutality, raids at the wrong house, etc)!
  • Don't give in the anti-gun activist.  People have a right to armed self-defense! Enforcing gun laws comes with too much risk of violating civil liberties (ie mass incarceration, racial profiling, police brutality, raids at the wrong house, etc)! 
  • Reduce corporate taxes! Even the so-called "socialist" European countries have lower corporate taxes. 
  • De-federalize certain policies. I'll let each state determine their policies for things like minimum wage, education policy, drug policy, health policy and more!
  • Environmental policy with sanity! Yes go after those who pollute lakes, rivers, streams, etc. But don't give in to those who want to ban plastic bags or plastic bottles. Those things don't litter themselves! Stop picking on innocent users just because of some guilty ones!
  • Legalize hemp so that people can make paper out of hemp! Hemp takes less space than trees to make the same amount of paper, and it's stronger too! Who cares if hemps looks like a leaf from the "Chronic" album?
  • No more of these laws with 100+ pages! All they do is invite lobbyists to make special exceptions for themselves, as well as add stuff that will penalize civilians who don't have time to read over every law in existence. I wouldn't even sign a law with 10+ pages, and even if needs more pages (I doubt it), make the extra pages a separate law!
  • Allow all U.S.  "territories" to vote if they want independence. If they want to remain a part of the US, allow them to have VOTING representatives in Congress. Also, allow D.C. to have VOTING representatives in Congress!
  • Allow Hawaii to vote if it wants independence, but allows ALL residents (not just those with native ancestry) to vote on that! After all, non-native residents were allowed citizenship of Hawaii before the US took over!
There's more, but screw it, it's a start!



Though if Hawaii becomes independent, I'll just go for being President of Hawaii.  We can have our own military and not worry about the feds writing our policies. Most of the stuff on that list will still apply I become the President of an Independent Hawaii.
