Abortion Reduces Crime

Abortion Reduces Crime

How?

Check out this editorial from the Wall Street Journal

http://www.opinionjournal.com/la/?id=110006550

Back in 1999, Mr. Levitt was trying to figure out why crime rates had fallen so dramatically in the previous decade. He was struck by the fact that crime began falling nationwide just 18 years after the Supreme Court effectively legalized abortion. He was struck harder by the fact that in five states crime began falling three years earlier than it did everywhere else. These were exactly the five states that had legalized abortion three years before Roe v. Wade.

Did crime fall because hundreds of thousands of prospective criminals had been aborted? Once again, the pattern by itself is not conclusive, but once again Mr. Levitt piles pattern on pattern until the evidence overwhelms you. The bottom line? Legalized abortion was the single biggest factor in bringing the crime wave of the 1980s to a screeching halt.

Let's be real about this - people get abortions because they're not mentally prepared to be a good parent of the potential baby growing inside.

And if one isn't mentally prepared to be a parent, chances are, once the baby is born, the baby would more likely 2 be abused. The child will more likely to be in poverty and live in the ghetto. In many cases, the father would ditch mom and the kid - causing the mom to work more than 1 job just to pay the bills. The kid will have a really rough life.

In many cases, the kid would've been better off if born 10 years later, because 10 years later, the mother would be mentally prepared to be a good parent.

In too many cases, kids are born to unprepared parents. In too many cases, those kids don't have the ideal parents and not living in ideal circumstances. In too many cases, those kids are the perfect recruits to violent gangs. In those cases, those kids might've been better off sent to heaven before birth.

Not all kids in those situations end up as violent predators. My oldest brother was born to a single mother. The father ditched the family. Yet, that brother is a college graduate, work at Bank of Hawaii, and has a condo in Hawaii Kai, one of the most luxurious communities in Hawaii.

However, my mom was also lucky to find another man who was willing to care for my oldest brother. In the process, that man had 2 kids with my mom (me being 1 of the 2).

Other mothers aren't so lucky. Other kids aren't so lucky. Too many kids I knew from elementary school dropped out of high school. Some spent time in jail. Some were on drugs the last time I saw them. Some of them, I didn't want to hang out with when I became a teenager because I didn't want to get sucked into their world. Yet, I worry about them now.

This is why I believe in giving out condoms. This is why I believe in selling birth control pills.

While abstinence before marriage is the ideal - in the real world people get into the sexual mood without planning it.

Once the sexual mood jumps in, no amount of conservative correctness (which EVERY person heard a MILLION TIMES while growing up) will stop the sexual mood.

So we ought to live in reality, give people condoms, sell birth control pills, and if the last resort is required, provide legal abortions.

If not, be prepared to be violently robbed by another drug addict born to another unprepared parent.

Girls and $$$$

At Sacred Hearts Academy (the all-girls school in Honolulu), girls are learning money management or as one of the teachers call it - "economic self-defense"

http://starbulletin.com/2005/04/11/news/index1.html

Girls are vulnerable economically because they tend to earn less than their male counterparts, live longer and have lesser retirement plans

Let's not forget that girls really like to have a lot of expensive things like cosmetics, jewelry, flashy clothes, etc. Add it all up - it can lead girls to more economic vulnerability.

"We find that even today, two-thirds of girls in schools, when asked how they're going to support themselves economically, say, 'Well, I'm going to marry well,'" Godfrey said. "At the same time, what we're finding is young men are rebelling and beginning to ask, 'Why should I do that?' What we have emerging is a cultural gap."

And I am one of those young men rebelling against gold-diggers. I am rebelling against paying for everything for a girlfriend. Buying your girlfriend stuff is OK in moderation, but do it 2 much is a sign of weakness. Girls gotta pay their share too.

BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY - girls who when asked how they're going to support themselves economically, say, 'Well, I'm going to marry well - are putting themselves in A LOT OF DANGER!

Abusive males want their girlfriends 2 be financially dependent on them. How many times a woman is reluctant to leave her abusive lover becuase she is financially dependent on him. She has nowhere to go, she's literally a slave to her abusive boyfriend/husband.

That's why I think it's so silly for the Radical Right to demand that woman stay home and let the man work. That's a recipe for disaster and abuse. Abusive males wouldn't have it any other way!

The battle of the Jesses

Sometimes in life, you must alliances with those you sometimes disagree with. It's very unlikely that you'll meet someone who disagree with you 100%. Some people may be pricks, but that doesn't you'll never agree on anything.

Here is the situation with the 2 Reverend Jesse's. One is Reverend Jesse Jackson, the well known African American liberal activists. The other is Reverend Jesse Lee Peterson, an African American conservative and a nemesis of Rev. Jackson.

On the Teri Schiavo controversy, both Rev. Jesse Jackson and Rev. Jesse Peterson happened to agree that the feeding tube should've stayed.

However, Rev. Peterson has so much hate for Rev. Jackson that scolded Teri Schiavo's parents for even embracing Rev. Jackson.

Our prayers go out to Terri and the Schindler family. I know they want to help their daughter, but they should be careful about praying with the devil in their hour of need.

Praying with the devil?

The Schindlers (Schiavo's parents) may or may not agree with Rev. Jackson on many issues, but they put all that on the side when Rev. Jackson supported their side. You gotta do that sometimes.

The Pope

Pope John Paul II has passed away.

He was the first non-Italian pope in 455 years. He spoke up against communism and other forms of dictatorships. He was loved by millions.

Soon, the search is on for the next pope. I wouldn't be surprised if the next pope is from the Third World. That is where most of the growth of Catholic Church is right now. We might have the 1st non-European pope.

Pharmacies, Contraception and Conscience

Paul Krugman had an interesting scenario to discuss.

http://www.nytimes.com/2005/03/29/opinion/29krugman.html

And it won't stop there. There is a nationwide trend toward "conscience" or "refusal" legislation. Laws in Illinois and Mississippi already allow doctors and other health providers to deny virtually any procedure to any patient. Again, think of how such laws expose doctors to pressure and intimidation.

Though I am for birth control pills, I still dont think government ought to force pharmacies to sell them. This is freedom.

A few years back, Hawaii governor Linda Lingle legalized the sale of emergency contraceptions (the morning-after pill) but refused to force pharmacies to sell them. Some birth-control advocates weren't happy. However, they must remember the freedom of religion. St. Francis hospitals (there's 2 of them on Oahu) are Catholic hospitals, so it's against their religion to sell birth control pills.

What next, do we force Jewish and Muslim cafeterias to serve pork? (I love pork, but i can go elsewhere to buy pork)

Going back to Krugman's point about intimidation of doctors and pharmacists. It is sad to see radical right wingers using threats against abortion providers and pharmacists who sell contraception pills. Those who do make those threats ought to be in prison.

But as I mentioned, government shouldn't force pharmacists to sell pills they dont want to sell. With that, Krugman still has the freedom to start a watchdog group to defend pharmacists and abortion providers against threats. Krugman still has the freedom to promote birth control. In fact, he could talk about starting a store specializing in selling birth control pills

Look at the Iraq situation. Barbers are being threatened for cutting people's hair in non-Islamic fashion. No one is forced to cut hair in non-Islamic style. But some do.

If I was president of Iraq, I'll let the barbers make the choice. Barbers can refuse to do non-Islamic hairstyle. Barbers can specialize in non-Islamic hairstyle. Either way, both ought to be protected from threats.

Same ought to be the situation on birth control. Pharmacies can refuse to sell contraception pills. Pharmacies can specialize in selling contraception pills. Either way, both ought to be protected from threats.

Women and Guns

Gun control fanatics claim that guns are used by abusive husbands who want to kill their wives.

What the gun control fanatics dont want to talk about is women using guns to defend themselves against attacks.

Malia Zimmerman explains women's need to have guns

http://www.hawaiireporter.com/story.aspx?6cdeb725-7856-415f-9db3-8fbc509a9716

Opponents to the right to bear arms say we should rely on police and calls to 9-1-1.

But how does 9-1-1 help the young women as she is snatched into a car with five men who intend to cause her harm.

How does 9-1-1 help the 85-year-old woman who is about to be tied up and raped by a man with previous sex offense convictions?

How does a 9-1-1 call help me when in the face of danger?

Truth is as good as police may be - or not be - at their jobs, they need time to respond to a call, and they need to be called.

What rapist is going to allow a woman to call police from her cell phone? What gang member will enable a victim to call for help?

DUH! This is why the rap group Public Enemy had a song called "911 is a joke". That got controversy, but when you're in imediate danger from a violent attack, 911 is a joke. You'll be dead before you can even dial 911, much less even speak to a 911 dispatcher.

Now I'll let Malia Zimmerman continue

But what every gang member, what every rapists, what every previous sex offender can understand and will respond to is the barrel of a gun pointed between his eyes - or lower.

That's right, the only language violent criminals understand is violence and fear. No amount of politically correct whining will ever erase that fact. Remember, most criminals would rather rob a 5-2 woman living in public housing than rob mulit-millionaire Shaq. Shaq will crack the skulls of anyone who messes with him. A 5-2 woman can't do that. She'll need a gun to protect herself.

Last word from Malia Zimmerman

Lawmakers should be ashamed of themselves for not passing laws that enable the women of this state to protect themselves when confronted by violent criminals, many still on the streets because of the laws these lawmakers passed that favor criminals over victims.

The best editorial on Teri Schiavo

Of all the editorials about the Teri Schiavo controversy, this New York Times editorial said it best.

It talks about the tragedy surrounding Teri Schiavo without attempting to score political points. It humanizes both sides of the debate.

(Because it's too long, I'll just leave you the link to the editorial)
